Maybe it is the Polish word można, which is an adverb and translates as 'one can' ect.

Sounds like a Jewish name which originated as a toponymic nikcname to identify someone as an inhabitant of Moszna.
Of course the -er ending is German (Danziger, Berliner, &c.), but Yiddish is a dialect of German!

Hmmmm.... "moszna" and "można" - dangerously similar:)
*I am making a mental note to be very careful with pronunciation*

"Moszna tu palić?"
"Nie, bo mam na sobie azbestowe majtki."

By no means. Any name can be used by a Jew, but such typically German names as Schmidt, Müller, Bauer, Wagner, Schulz, Becker, Klein, Hofmann, Richter, Fischer and many others are primarily used by people of German ethnicity. However certain German names are more likely to be used by Jews and these include such toponymic surnames as Lubliner, Lodzer, Lubartower, Minsker, Krakuer, Posener, Danziger, Breslauer, also craft names such as Gold, Goldschmidt, Silber, Silbermann , Perlmann, Diamant, Rubinstein, Mengel, Kretschmer (Yiddish version of karczmarz). Also certain things from nature: Birnbaum, Apfelbaum, Löwe, Hecht, Kirchstein and many more. Which is not say that there is no German, Dane, Pole, Finn or Bolivian with some of those names.
