How would you trranslate THE NEXT BEST THING?
For instance: If you can't visit Europe, the next best thing is watching National Geographic or other travel programs on TV.

Polonius3:
If you can't visit Europe, the next best thing is watching National Geographic or other travel programs on TV.

Jeśli nie możecie zwiedzić Europy, zawsze możecie oglądać National Geographic lub inny kanał podróżniczy.

It's full sentence, but now i see that you want us to translate only "the next best thing", but for this moment i can't help you, maybe someone else can.
When i find something I'll post it.

zamiast tego = instead of/in place of

Jeśli nie możesz odwiedzić Europy, zawsze możesz oglądać National Geographic lub inny kanał podróżniczy.

(you can always)

Jeśli nie możesz odwiedzić Europy, najlepiej będzie oglądać National Geographic lub inny kanał podróżniczy.

(it will be the best to)

Jeśli nie możesz odwiedzić Europy, zamiast tego możesz oglądać National Geographic lub inny kanał podróżniczy.

(instead of it, you can)

I would translate it like that.

THE NEXT BEST THING?

Also you can use: następną najlepszą sprawą....

Jeśli nie możesz odwiedzić (or jechać do) Europy to następną najlepszą sprawą jest oglądnąć "National Geographic" lub inny telewizyjny podróżniczy kanał.

Sorry, but that just sounds weird, like some bad translation.

What is your version?
Listen, I'm a Polish native and I know what I'm writing. That's my version and I would say something like that but it doesn't mean you have to say it or use it .
Everyone has their own & different language style.

I think we don't have an exact phrase that could be close enough to the English original. The literal translation, that is najlepszą następną sprawą doesn't really sound well in Polish ...

The problem has reminded me of the following song once sung by Polish scouts:

Kto pieniążki ma, ten jedzie do Bombaju
A kto pieniążków nie ma, ten zostaje w kraju

Kto pieniążki ma, ten jedzie do Krynicy
A kto pieniążków nie ma, ten głową do miednicy

A nam wszystko jedno, my mamy cały świat
Bo harcerz bez pieniędzy jest zuch i chwat! (repeated)

So, according to this song, the best translation of the above English phrase containing the expression "next best thing" would be: "Kto nie może zobaczyć Europy na własne oczy, [ten] ogląda programy o Europie na kanale "National Geographic". In order to make the sentence sound well, it should be said in another way in Polish.

Agreed.

Simply 'the next best thing' as Polonius3 wants it cannot be translated literally.
Sildar and Anomim gave good substitutes here.
