szmaciarz (szmata = a shot/goal that should have been stopped by a keeper but it had not)

szmata means literally a rag - imagine a rag being kicked into a goal and the keeper failing to stop it

szmaciarz however has other meanings too

So then, if "piłkarz" is a soccer player ('footballer' to you, most likely), what is "goalie"? In German, it's "Torwart", literally "He who keeps watch over the goal post", since "Tor!" means "goal!"

Thanks! Makes sense too, 'brama' = gate, so 'bramkARZ' = the "gater", literally or figuratively speaking. LOL

Bramkarz is also a chucker-out who keeps undesirables from entering an establishment or chucks out drunks and trouble-makeers.
