So i watched a polish movie called Psy directed by Władyslaw Pasikowski. I assumed the title would mean dogs because isn't psy the plural of pies. But the title is translated as Pigs. I tried looking psy up in the dictionary but i didn't find it. I know that pig is świnia and pigs is świnie. Can someone please explain why / how psy is translated into pigs and not dogs.

Just like "hot dog" can be translated as "gorący pies", or "psia krew" as dog's blood.
Dogs don't translate well. :)

You are right "psy" is plural form from "pies".
In Poland some people used word "glina/gliny" as a slang (means "mud) for a policeman/men and it was known.
Some years ago, while communism was ending in Poland, between 1989/90, the communists were destroying important and different kind of documents using Police force.
In my assumtion that's when word "psy" became known.
"Psy" (the policemen) like a slaves (because "pies" - a dog, is the best man's friend) were assisting communists to destroy important materials/evidence.
The different thing is ...did they have a choice.

It's like in English when we call people pigs, people who disgust us (i.e. The police)
in Poland I guess they use dogs

Davey

the idea of the police being dogs in Polish slang is also by their roles - guarding and pursuing - actually a dog hasn't that bad a name in Polish society
