The dictionary gives telephony in English, but does anyone actually use it? Probably telecommunications would be better, innit?

Telecommunications and telephony are not exact synonyms. SMS, for example, would more naturally fit into the category of telecommunications rather than telephony. I use both words, but neither very often. So far I haven't needed to use a similar term in the Polish language.

Polonius will now describe something equally interesting about telefonia and related Polish terminology and I will spend the next three weeks reading it.
