I have found the words in my english - polish dictionary, but I get the uneasy feeling that there may be subtle differences that a book cannot explain. Many apologies if the book is as simple as it gets!

mam kac moralny

I have a hangover moral.

I translate this as (in my mind ) I have a moral regret.

Any help is very much welcome.

We usually say 'mam kaca moralnego'. It means that you regret what you did when you were drunk (so your headache is not the worse what you feel in the morning ;-) .
I'm not sure if it's correct in English, but I 'd translate it as 'I have a moral hangover'

Cinek.

Not exactly, it generally means that we regret doing something, so not always "when we were drunk". Maybe it meant something like that years ago, but now it's a general statement for feeling huge remorse.

I don't think I would agree with this. Kac (hangover) is kac and a moral regret can be part of it (not always, however, but in some people and in certain circumstances) or not. The term "kac" is basically about your physical feelings after drinking. The term "kac moralny" is applied when a person did something morally dubious or wrong towards someone else and he/she regrets it much afterwards; the feeling is rather unpleasant - that is why people compare it to a hangover after an excessive use of alcohol. It may even be that the person who experiences "kac moralny" may have not drunk alcohol in all his life.

Actually, I have it worse. I have "kac moralny" as a part of "kac" (hangover) and I didn't have to do anything wrong. Just drinking was wrong enough, on its own. Or maybe things like losing time, money, taking time off - are wrong for me and make me frustrated. I hate this feeilng.
