Umowa o dzieło - praca zlecona

What exactly is the difference between these two? How are each officially translated into English?

They are both freelance contracts. O dzieło focusses on the final result, e.g making chairs or craftsmanship, developing a specific computer program. You can see the end product and judge if it met the specification/contractual stipulation. It's when companies place an order for 10 chairs and they can see the workmanship done to see if it is, in Scots Law terms, 'fit for its purpose'. Old parlance was 'of merchantable quality'. Praca zlecona is more general where you don't focus on the final result. Like teaching, for example. However, fear not. I was under o dzieło as a teacher and that was a nonsense as you can't accurately evaluate if they were learning 4 times faster or not. That was the service being offered. You can't see the final product like you can for furniture production. Some employers cheat like this.

So how would one translate praca zlecona? Free-lance work, part-time employment or what? For instance to differentiate in the sentence: Część pracowników pracuje u nas w oparciu o umowę o dzieło, a część wykonuje prace zlecone.

A part of our workforce works under the contract for visible result (that's my name for it) and another part work under a contract of general effect (also my name for it). The difference is that you don't pay ZUS under o dzieło but you do under praca zlecona.

The translations I always use are: "commission contract" - umowa zlecenie and "contract of mandate" / "contract for specific work" - umowa o dzieło. I guess it's better to use the latter term in the case of umowa o dzieło, and talking about commission contract to add a phrase like "contract for a limited period of time" or sth like that, since I've seen "zlecenie" translated as "mandate" and "dzieło" translated as "commission", so I guess more people have problems with differentiating the two :)

This is a helpful link, however the best would be a bilingual Polish-English glossary. Does any such exist?

at the top of that page there's a link to the original Polish word document. Not much help if you don't know Polish but if I find anythinf suitable I'll post it The only online dictionary I use sometimes is here: http://www.dict.pl/dict?add_action=home&lang=EN sufficient for my needs but not sure how detailed it is...try
