The word: Faculty. Does it mean something different in Poland?

I am a native English speaker, and I have always been confused with the way Polish people use the term 'Faculty' when speaking English...and I am not sure why?

In English, the word Faculty is quite rare..but means a division of a university in a wide subject area (eg. Faculty of Science)

I get the impression that Poles use it to mean 'department' or 'building' when speaking English.

Can anyone help me out?

Interesting, faculty is mostly used for a college/ university staff or a division (dept). Maybe because of the dept within a univ some ppl got confused… honestly no clue lol, I’ve never heard anybody using faculty for anything other than a univ staff or a division.

seems they don't know English that well... faculty is used in the same way in Polish as in English.

There is a Polish word fakultet, which is used in university contexts as mentioned above.

In the US 'faculty' refers to teaching staff.

In many European languages it can mean something like US 'college' (within a university, college of engineering, college of business administration etc). This would by 'wydział' in Polish.

I've also come across Polish 'fakultet' meaning something like US 'elective' (a non-required course within a degree program).

You are using it in only one form in English.

sar, I was restricting my discussion of 'faculty' to its uses in US academia (where I've never personally heard it used as anything but teaching staff).

Dictionary dumps are seldom useful....
