any ancestors of immigrants TO Poland?

The long lost story is that my ancestors lived in Suwalki, but had the non-Polish last name of Newman, or Neumann. Several generations listed in records going back as far as 1850 (great-grandparents came to the US around 1910).

I have no idea what the ethnic background of my family is, but I'd really love to know the whole history. I've read that immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian empire came to Poland for work long ago. Anyone gots the info on this?

Thanks!

Newman seems unlikely but Neumann as a German or Yiddish surname is quite probable. With only that information it is impossble to recreate your family's history.
Suwałki was part of tsarist Russia's Pale, an area where Jews were allowed to settle.
