the names "markiewicz" etc

sernik   Sep 6, 06, 23:02 /  #
hi there,

I would like information about the origins of the name "markiewicz". It may be a derivative of other name/s. Does it have any Jewish connections?

Also, the names "trapler" and "szyfler" - they sound of German origin. Can anyone please give some insight?

many thanks.

Marek in Poland means "Mark" (first name). I think it derives from this first name somehow. Don't know about "trapler" or "szyfler" (sound German or ... Jewish indeed).

I'm not quite sure why someone should be sorry if their family name was jewish!

My grandmother's name was "Almakiewicz", which came from "Almak-han".
That was a Tatarian Royal Clan.

is it true that many polish people still discrimate against jews? I've read some history and there has been much ill feeling towards jews in the deep dark past; some current writers state it is as active as before, only perhaps more hidden.

Yup. Mostly the older generation, who lived amongst the jews. They tell stories how the jews cheated others, how they could not be trusted, etc. But the younger generation is not troubled by that at all.

I'm sure that people did what they could to get by right or wrong as it might be...but I dont know why anyone would dislike Jewish people, I live close to an area which is predominately Jewish and it's a nice place to live, no problems.

I heard comments in America too that there's too many jews running the government, etc.
I have a very good friend who's jewish. She's very smart and so is her sister and brother, and I like her a lot. But some people have problems with them, just like with other nations.

Mainly because they only care about money. They're cheap and will try to swindle you out of anything. We have man many many here in NJ. We have th hacidic(sp) with the curls and black trench coats. They are the rudest people. They can't drive and they're violent. Since they all live in this "religous" community they don't pay taxes.

I grew up with many jews and don't hate any personally, but all of the stereotypes are true.

It's a correct stereotype. Known worldwide.

hey guys, if you accept the stereotypes about jews, then you must by definition, accept stereotypes about out nationalities for example: people tend to think poles and the irish are rather "dull" mentally (i.e. stupid, slow, thick).....do you think that's true??

People who make such statements are dull.

Any name can be a Jewish name! Jewish surnames are derived from not only Hebrew and Yiddish but also from Spanish, the Slavonic tongues, Romanian, English, etc., wherever Jewish people settled.
Personally I do not perceive the term Jewish in purely religious terms. To me it identifies a Semitic ethnic group akin to Arabs. Centuries of different admixtures have naturally altered the original purely Semitic DNA.
