Hej Polishforum,

I've wondered about my surname for a long time, as it is extremely rare, even for Poles.
Anyway i was wondering if it translated to anything or related to another word similar?

Some background to provide any help:
My grandfather on my Dad's side with the surname was originally Ukraniain from the Jaroslaw area (now Poland), my babscia had the surname Kot (cat) from the areas around Gora Kalwaria and Stoczek Lukowski. Anyway, I remember my father telling me he had cousins from another uncle or whatnot (who i have never met, not sure if really related) here in Australia with a different spelling, Szkilnyk, but either of the 2 spelling of the name have probably been converted over from cyrilic Ukranian spelling. Another spelling i have seen is Szkolnik.

Also, i used to live in Warszawa at Primary school age, and remember a Polish artist there with the same spelling, as well as seeing a plumber or window glazer on the way to the airport with the same spelling Szkilnik , so there are a few out there!

Dziekuje

Szkolnik would come from szkoła, meaning school
Szkilnik might come from szkło, meaning glass. A glass worker is a szklarz
perunvit   Oct 8, 07, 04:16 /  #
in ukrainian szkilnyk means scholar not some glass worker

Hi, My surname is also Szkilnik and I think we have to be cousins. This surname is realy rare. The advertisment which you have seen in Warsaw near airport belongs to my father`s windows factory. I talked to my grandfather about our family and he said that his grandfather came from Wietlin near Jaroslaw. I know that two brothers of great-grandfather`s emigrated to Canada. Best regards
NOTMANU   Feb 3, 08, 21:26 /  #
Actually back to RUMANU.. Grandfather Kyrylo ( Cyril or Karol) was born and lived in Makowisko near Jaroslaw.. emigrated via Germany to Australia after WWII with brother Maxim Szkilnyk
I have also read some stuff on the Canada immigrants ( Jacob and brother Andrew.. ?)

Looks like lots more missing cousins around.

Cougar, Kyrylo is my grandfather btw

Oh, i have also recently read of a Jack Skolnik who was associated with Victorian Football (soccer) and the set up of a league for migrant clubs in the 1940's. I think he represented the Hakoah (jewish) club as president.... this is outlined in the book Soccer Boom: The Transformation of Victorian Soccer Culture 1945-1963

I wondered if this name was also somehow related

Greetings from Canada, all my fellow Szkilnyks! My name is Tammy Skilnick-Mierau and I have been working on the family tree for some time now but have just found out why it has been so difficult ... the name is so elusive as it was anglocized from the original Szkilnyk when we first entered Canada to its present spellings of Skilnick, Skilnik, Shkilnyk. There are two families of Skilnicks in Canada, each using many of the same men's names of Jacob, Wasyl, John, Andrew etc. and the different variations of the names. Its confusing for anyone, let alone a genealogist! We are presently trying to find out how we are all related. My Szkilnyk family originally came from Jaroslaw (possibly from Przemysl and/or Laszki?) around 1902 or 1903. My great grandfather Jacob Szkilnyk (Yarko Szkilnyk on his homestead papers) settled in the Jedburg area in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. His brother settled in the Buford area in the province of Alberta, Canada. A third brother and his wife were denied entry into Canada as the wife reportedly had tuberculosis - they went to Argentina! ( I have been contacted by some Skilnik's from Sao Paulo, Brazil). My great-grandfather was known to write letters to his Szkilnyk relatives in New York, USA.

I had the Skilnick surname researched as my grandfather, John used to think it meant 'palace guard'. I have since been corrected and assured that the really meaning meant 'school boy' or 'pupil'. If you are interested in the material I received from this search, I'd be glad to send it to you. Any other information for my genealogy would be appreciated by any and all Szkilnyks, Skilnicks, Skilniks, Shkilniks, etc. Thanks to you all. Great to see the "elusive Szkilnyks/Skilnicks" coming together. Please feel free to contact me. My email address is: tammymierau@yahoo.ca

Szkolnik was Polish for a teacher in a Jewish szul. Szkilnik appears to be the Ukrainianised version.

Hi All, I'm of the other Canadian Skilnick's that Tammy mentions above. My grandfather came here from Poland?Ukraine in the 1890's, his name was Jacob. He later brought his brother, Andrew and family in 1921. I would like to share more information with other Szkilnyk's/Skilnick's also. You can email: eskil1@skyweb.ca

Have you ever tried doing a search for SKILNICK's on w*w.facebook.com to see if there are Skilnick's there. SZKILNYK was the old country spelling and many have changed the name through the years.

Hi - I am also one of the other Canadian Skilnicks mentioned in Tammy's post. My grandfather's name was Jacob and my mother is his youngest daughter Catharine who is now 88. Jacob married Annie Pachalko and their children were: John (Jack), Nick, Mary, Fred, Bill, Catharine, and Steve. Jacob's brother Andrew was my uncle and was married to Mary Sereda (Serada). Their children (althought I really don't know the accuracy) are/were Mary, Kay, Ann, Ollie, Eva, Nick (in B.C.), Petrysha, Andrew and Henry. My mother recalls Grandpa Jacob spelling his name as: Jacob Szkilnik, later changed to Skilnick. She recalls him writing letters to the "old country". I do have a picture of Jacob in a uniform; don't know if he was in the army as the picture is not too clear. I also have a picture of their wedding. Also I live very near to Toronto but I do not understand Polish at all and have lost most of my Canadian Ukrainian lingo. You can email me at: fkalichuk@sympatico.ca
