Surnames Janiewicka and Weshesfisky and Dumore

I am working on my husband's family tree. The surnames listed in the subject line are from his grandfather's social security number application. He stated his mother's full maiden name was Rose Janiewicka and that his "stepfather" was John Weshesfisky. I have found the family in the 1920 census, but no where else. Rose states she was born in Austria, as were her parents. She notes Polish as her native language. John (who is listed as Joe on the census), says he was born in Russia, both parents born there and native language as Russian. They were living in Queens, New York. The grandfather listed his own surname as Dumore on the application, but stated he did not know his father's name. Name signed was Anthony Dumore. Anthony Dumore married Viola Agnes Baker, whose mother was Anna Miller, of Polish descent. Any help would be appreciated.

carolynegould: Rose states she was born in Austria, as were her parents. She notes Polish as her native language. Poland had been partitioned and had come under Austrian rule. That may explain Polish as her native language. Russia also helped itself to parts of Poland. You need to compare the history with the years they were born and lived.

carolynegould Well there are a few places you can look : 1 what was the religion of your husband stepfather and mother. If Catholic than try to find the marriage certificate. Back than it was probably in Latin, find polish catholic churches (doesn't have to be but most poles tended to try and find ethnic churches and go out of thier way to attend) near where your family resided. Most churches I have called have bent over backwards to help find records. Most times the marriage certificate will list the town where the couple was born/baptized. 2 If john weshesfisky became a citizen it is possible his spouces information will be listed on the petition of naturalization record. This is not guaranteed but it tends to be more specific/accurate than soc sec records.
