Hi, I am searching for the roots of my Polish Grandfather. He was captured and taken to Siberia in WW2 and escaped and made it to the UK. I don't know his date of birth, town of birth or anything but I understand there are just a few people out there with this surname. Do you have or know of anybody who has this name please? As it seems to be quite unusual, I feel that if I am lucky enough to find people with the name and make contact with them, it may lead me to the origins of my grandfather.

Thank you so much :-)

Could be of jewish origins.

w w w. publicprofiler.org/worldnames/Default.aspx
points Dolnośląskie (Wroclaw region) with 4 occurences per million.

Not very common surname as you can see.

When I was in the Salvation Army Training college 1961-2, there was a young man, Jan, I think, who had escaped from Siberia, surviving my eating berries and trapped animals.
Could this be the one? I've no idea where he is now but the Salvation Army should know. I'd be interested to know, too.

That's very interesting - now all I need to do is find out who and where the 4 in a million are.
I have wondered sometimes if it may be of Jewish origin - originating from the Jewish word for peace - Shalom - as that of course is how it is pronounced.

That's great, thank you. I'll try that. So many of the directories are really tough unless you know the cities and speak Polish - I'm picking up little bits and fully intend to learn properly asap. :-)
