Actually the only ppl that I've heard using it were Austrian and I thought it was an Austrian thing until I heard my Hungarian friends use it for the first time at the funeral of their dad. I never heard Polish ppl use it. But "service" does make sense: "service - servus", it doesn't take that much imagination to see that these two words are somehow related.

The reason for your not hearing it is most likely given that you live in another region. In Silesia, you are most likely to hear Germanic words.

Younger people don't use it here. At least I've never heard it. It does tend to be an older person's thing. Older being over 30 :(

Hm, why the sad smiley? You're over 30? :) Don't worry, I am too and it doesn't really matter now, does it?

Nah, I don't mind. I'm as old as I feel. I was the only one who glided through the footie match last Tuesday. All the young boys were peching away.

We can make ourselves feel younger with the right attitude.

Serwus is rarely used, but still is used, but the polish almost always say cześć. Siema is becoming more popular among teenagers.

Thing to remember:

DON'T EVER USE THE WORD serwus. IT IS OLD and CRAPPY.

If somebody greets you with 'SERWUS', RUN forest RUN!!! He is stupid, fag or fucked.
Anyway you don't wanna have friends who say 'serwus' (unless they are 60+ years old).

I had a guy say it today. He came to the school I teach at and he is one of the guys I play football with. He always says it.

I'd be very worried in your case. Though in football a good running speed is good.

Serwus is an everyday greeting (similar meaning to cześć) in the Transylvania region of Romania. In Cluj I would hear it all the time.

Are you mad? I'm a native polish speaker, and serwus is sometimes used by teenagers. It is definetly not an archaic word, it's just rarely used.

LOL, jendi, how old are you? I am guessing you're not a teenager anymore.
Believe me, if any Polish teenager ever says serwus, it is just jokingly, never as a real greeting :P
