Hi i am brand new and this is my first post. I have been learning polish for a few weeks from my great grandmother and i am picking up on it. this is just about all i know, and i am not that good at writing. And i am confused on a few things. I have seen 2 ways to say "What is your name"
1. Jak się nazywasz
2. Mam na iemę (or something simular, not sure)

And i would like to know, i have heard potato spoken as "Kartofle" and "Ziemniak". I learned it as Kartofle, does this show the different dialects? Anyway, dziękuję.

na imię się = my given name is...
nazywam się = my family name is...

ziemniak/kartofel... Six of one; one half dozen of the other. (Though I believe ziemniak is used more often.)

Trevor:
Mam na iemę

Mam na imię... - means 'My name is...'

Trevor:
I learned it as Kartofle, does this show the different dialects?

Krakow - ziemniaki... one ziemniak - it's common...
Silesia - kartofle... one kartofel
Poznań - pyry... one pyra
Kaszuby - bulwy... one bulwa
...

Jak się nazywasz?

That is fine for "what is your name?" Most folks will understand. ;)

Babinich:
na imię się

with no 'się'

Kapusta:
Jak się nazywasz?

it asks to give the last name (full name) also...
'Jak masz na imię' asks only for the first name...

Welcome to the PF struggling learner's club.

Trevor:
i am not very good

As I said, welcome to the club.

I'd say "Trudno mi mówić po polsku."
I don't know how correct that is, but Poles generally seem to understand.

Hmm, I understand but the OP doesn't specify a difference.

So I'd say:

Jak się nazywasz?

na imię Kapusta

or for the full name?

"So I'd say:

- Jak się nazywasz? first name and last name
- Jan Kowalski.

- Jak masz na imię? only first name
- Jan.

This is my first post too ;)

Man na imię Trevor. Miło cię poznać. (is this right for "nice to meet you")
- Miło cię poznać. Do widzenia.
Do widzenia.

Edit: pgtx was first. :)

Trevor:
Świetny

świetnie (should be adverb, not adjective)

Trevor:
Jak się imię?

Jak masz na imię?

Trevor:
Man

Mam

Trevor:
Do widzenia.

Very formal for a friend. Do zobaczenia (see you later) is less formal.

And I think you mixed:
Mam = I have
Masz = you have (singular)

Good Luck! Polish is difficult for us who try to learn it, but fun.

I am learing from the "osetta Stone"course, and for me it works great.

One is submerged into the Polish language.... I do have good scores, but my knowledge mainly stays passive.. which is the natural first step in learning another language.

But...kocham Poslkie...
