Podobać się vs Lubić

Please somebody, give some examples of when to use podobać się instead of lubić and vice versa. My teacher said that podobać się is used when the object can be seen, smelled, touched etc. But I'm not really sure about this... Would I say Mięso mi się podoba or Lubię mięso ? I'm OK with things like Czerwona sukienka mi się podoba bardziej niż zielona sukienka. Are there any rules when it is preferable to use one verb as opposed to the other? Many thanks in advance.

lubić = to like
(s)podobać się = to be pleased by, to find pleasing.


Bardzo lubię muzykę klasyczną. = I really like classical music.

Wystawa sztuki wczoraj popołudniem nie mi się spodobała. = I didn't enjoy the art exhibit yesterday afternoon.

"Lubić" is a verb which expresses our positive emotional attitude towards something. And if we use "lubić" with another verb, it could be also translate as "enjoy".

Lubię pływać - I like swimming = I enjoy swimming.
Lubię wujka Józka - I like Uncle Józek.
Lubię The Rolling Stones - I like The Rolling Stones = I enjoy their music.

"Podobać się" expresses our judgement about something. "Lubić" describes how we permanently fell about something and "podobać się" is more about what we feel at the moment. If I say "Lubię tę szarą sukienkę" (I like that grey dress), this means I've had this dress for some time, I enjoy wearing it, and probably I'd find it hard to get rid of it. I can't say this, if I see it for the first time in a shop. Then, if I want to express my judgement and simply say it's pretty in my opinion, I'll say "Podoba mi się ta szara sukienka".

The same, if I must know a song for some time to say "I like this song", because "lubię" expresses my emotional attitude. I can't have emotional attitude to a song I hear for the first time. But if I want to say "I like this song" just to say that I find it nice (even if I hear it for the first time), I'll say "Podoba mi się ta piosenka".

If you know some German:
Lubię to = Ich mag es.
To mi się podoba = Das gefällt mir.

you will say Lubię mięso in sense that u like eating meat but if u will go to butcher and you want to choose a meat then u will say podoba mi się ten kawałek/porcja mięsa.

Yes, exactly Świteżianka! The German equivalent is very close indeed. This I know as a bilingual German-English native speaker.-:)

Lubić v. Podobać się - Your explanation was most informative. Thank you. BUT, a Polish friend told me yesterday that podobać się should not be used with reference to foods and drinks. Instead smakować vi should be used. Would you agree Switezianka with the following?:
Tak, bardzo lubię mięso (in general), ale ten mięso mi nie smakuje (specfically this meat I am eating right now (badly cooked?) or for the first time)

In English: Yes, as a rule I like meat very much, but I don't like this meat

Your comments Switezianka would be much appreciated.

In the absence of Świtezianka (yes, she was really good and truly profesional in her explanations) who doesn't seem to visit the site any more, let me say that the correct form is: "to mięso (neutral noun) mi nie smakuje". You can also say, however, "to mięso mi się nie podoba" with the sense that you don't like the look of it as it may not be fresh, for example.

Thanks for reply, AND for correcting my stupid mistake. Of course it should be to mięso! So podobać się could be used as you say BEFORE actually eating the meat. THEREAFTER if I don't like it I would use spakować.

That is a great shame if Świtezianka no longer visits this site. As you say, she was really professional, was very thorough in her explanations and gave great examples of usage. She will be very much missed. Isn't there a way of contacting her and asking her to come back?
