Question about the Nickname Ola versus Aleksandra

Ok...so this is probably a silly/stupid question but I've been curious about it ever since I was in Poland.

How do you get the nickname Ola from Aleksandra? What does Ola mean? Here in America many people with the name Alexandra will go by Alex or Allie......is Ola similar to one of those?

yup , Ola is a short form of Alexandra, like Alex is to Alexandra.

I thought it would probably end in -ek.
But Olek rather than Alek.

the form Alek also exists, but it sounds more "distinguished", so it's used for example by grown-ups who don't want to be called by the long version, they sometimes introduce themselves as Alek. Olek is just a standard diminuitive used for callings friends (if they aren't too snobby) or kids
