I use "Before You Know It" Free Download Language Program. Its a great way to learn some basics and my girlfriend is impressed at my steady progress. You can just do an internet search of "Before You Know It" or "BYKI" and you should find it easy.

Pimseurs is a great way to learn specific phrases
"Czy pani jestem Amerikaninem?" etc
But it's total lack of reading/writing/grammar will make anything more than parrot fashion speaking out of the question.
same with BYKI, Rosetta Stone and a mass of other self teaching guides.

They are great additions to a study programme BUT not sufficient alone.

If you really can't finance $30 per week for a SKYPE lesson then try doing a google of "University of Pittsburgh Polish language course"
Telefonika posted the http:// for the Pittsbrgh Uni (above).
It is by far the best resource I have seen.

Skype is a good way to chat to people and learn Polish online.

Try Verbalplanet.com if you want online Polish lessons with Skype.

the best ones I have used are the grammar and workbooks by Dana Bielec, published by Routledge - there are loads of exercises to reinforce the learning.

Haven't signed in for ages.....and so much help offered. Thanks everyone, will definitely look into some of the suggestions. I have now completed the Pimsleur course and feel a lot more knowledgable than before.....I have been told my accent is not bad either. I think my Polish friends are just humouring me.

Learn online....I never bought a single reading materal nor any software(I learned online from websites) and I went to Poland and communicated quite effectively, so I say don't waste your money.

There are swathes of online resources to consult. It is a good way to start but throwing yourself in at the deep end helps in this situation (getting out and about). I'm assuming that you are not obliged to learn Polish.
