Go into the grammar section and teach yourself the basics. PL people like to see that you're trying. It'll make a great impression. Good luck!

....for the PL gf that krysia suggested. But, I'm not sure if that's what you had in mind

The best piece of advice - be a studious and regular learner. There are no shortcuts and wonder ideas - you need to learn word by word and it does take time and determination. But if you dream of learning Polish or any other language the easy way - you are lost at the start.

Thanks for the advice so far ppl! Unfortunately, there are no Polish girls nearby or at my school...at least who are my age! Therefore there is no chance of me getting a Polish g/f.

I will be sure to check out the grammar section.

Listen to polish radio , order polish TV on cable . embrace yourself with the language everyday. Here it like it were used everyday. Of coarse study if you want it , it will come.

I too have been trying to study Polish language, and i find it very difficult. We have Polish radio, tv and my partner tries to ask me things in Polish and i answer in English, some times fun, other times very frustrating.

In the long term Polish is a waste of time as it is a shrinking world language. As all the talent and young leave Poland to live abroad. They say that we have 600,000 in England-I do not know if that is in the U.K. and Ireland as well but Chinese or Arabic would be better. A lot of hard work with little or no return. I must say from my own experiences too that the Czech's seem to be more 'on the ball' too. I have always found the Polish to be a little rude and aggressive. I have always prefered the Slovaks and Czechs myself, though, of course, that is just me. Maybe a visit to Prague and have a command of the language would be time better spent.

I see that you never have been in NYC. On Wall street, stock brokers would laugh at you and your ignorance.

Why would stock brokers need to talk Polish? English is the international business language.

Could you elaborate a bit?

I wouldn't personally call learning any language a waste of time. The very fact that there are 600,000 living in England shows that there is a demand for Polish - english translators. Also, my polish friend told me that there are good jobs available in Poland for english people who also speak polish.

My reasons for learning polish are not for work or material gain, but translation is a very viable option :)

In England near to where I live we have a large number of people with origins in Pakistan. Are we all therefore to learn Urdu with the Arabic writing? We have Chiese and Arabs too so before Polish we have a long way to go. In Guildford we used to have a lot of Czechs, that is, up until the time that the Poles could work in England legally, but it is rare to hear the language now. 600,000 is actualy not so many as
some will be temerary as many will earn money and move on back home or even further afield to Australia and France. I agree, that spending a lot of time on a minority language would be time badly spent.

As there are a million Welsh speakers it could be argued that Welsh should be compulsory before Polish. And no, there are more Polish people in Chicago than there are in England. Polish is of a minority interest value in England.

English people shouldn't have to learn polish and i'm sure none of the learners feel under such draconian pressure to do so. Conjugate the verb to go or else!!

I think they're fudging it a bit and doing it because they want to. That's the beauty of choice. The options are both available. Learning and the other thing not the melted sugar, condensed milk confectionery. Hmm now my sweet tooth is aching.

I waas not spreading************before that. In fact, it was Telefonitika who wrote...'apparently 80% of the U.K. population is Polish anyway it was on a radio station news bulletin'. How can 80% of the U.K. population be Polish?
