verbal nouns in -nie

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums so greetings first of all :)

I'm studying verbal nouns at the moment and am stuck.

When you make noun from a reflexive verb should you keep the reflexive participle 'się' or should you get rid of it? My example is 'martwić się'. Should the verbal noun be 'martwienie się', or just 'martwienie'? Or to illustrate it in a sentence:

1. On zajmuje się martwieniem
2. On zajmuje się martwieniem się

Is 1 or 2 correct above?

in general the noun would "martwienie się"

but I would never say "on zajmuje się martwieniem się" ... " on się zajmuje martwieniem się" sounds a bit better... in fact I'd probably choose 'on zajmuje się martwieniem" ... lol I'm Polish and I don't know...

You make it all too difficult by using a reflexive verb (się next to another się just doesn't sound good)

Martwienie się jest niezdrowe. That's a better exemple...

Mama nauczyła Tomka mycia się.

but really in polish that's too wordy.. i think you'd just say "on się martwi" .. i know that wasn't helpful but you wouldn't say it like you translated it..

Both are incorrect, don't use "zajmuje się", should be:

1 and 2 version)
On martwi się.

Also you can say:
On jest zmartwiony.

I don't agree. Even though it's hard to find a context when such sentence could be used, it is still correct from gramatical point of view.
However I'd say it as Ewcinka wrote:

On się zajmuje martwieniem się.

I didn't make up the sentence... it's from one of the grammar drills in my book (First Year Polish) and I think it's just to make you try and create the verbal noun from the verbs given...

But it makes more sense now :)

I don't think I've ever even said such a sentence in English!
