Minutes silence for Katyn victims in Moscow
Created: 10.03.2009 13:48
The Moscow City Court took out a minute of silence today in memory of those who died during the Katyn massacres of 1940.
Prosecutor in Moscow are calling for recognition by the Kremlin of its responsibility for the massacres of 1940, providing documentations signed by Stalin to prove that the NKVD – a forerunner to the KGB - murdered over 20,000 Polish officers captured when the Red Army invaded Poland at the beginning of WW II.
The Regional Court in Moscow ruled on 22 January, however, that the prosecutor did not provide conclusive evidence whether or not the matter falls under the category of ‘war crime.’ Poland has insisted that the massacre was ‘genocide’.
The Russian Prosecutor’s Office has so far only secured a decision that the Soviet government was responsible for the murders. (mmj/pg)
