70th Anniversary of start of WWII

Good time to start thinking about those Poles who gave their lives fighting in 1939.

Getting shot in the back while running away from germans is hardly giving your life.

I am not sure but I hope so. We should all remember all the victims of war.

You can win a war as much as you can win an earthquake.

Can anyone tell me if anything has been or is being planned for the 70th Anniversary of start of WWII (2009) in Poland ?

Don't know what is happening in Poland but a major new Polish Forces War Memorial is being designed and built at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, England is to be unveiled at a commemoration ceremony in September 2009. This is a non-governmental initiative by the families of UK Polish veterans and the memorial pays tribute to Polish land forces, Airforce, Navy and Underground Resistance forces—it also recognises those Polish forces that fought alongside the Red Army in the final victory over Nazism in Berlin 1945.

Project website is at (www) PolishForcesMemorial.com

Polish Forces War Memorial is being designed and built at the National Memorial Arboretum,

Yesterday 120 tonnes of engraved granite plaques and statue plinth for the Polish Forces War Memorial project was delivered on-site ready to receive the memorial statue which is on its way from Poznan and should arrive in UK early next week. The Polish MoD are sending over representatives from all the armed forces who will be joined by opposite numbers from British MoD to make up the honour guard.

Representatives of the Britsh government have been invited :-)

Thousands of Poles fled their homeland, many never to return, when their country was invaded by the Germans and the Russians during World War II. The Polish Armed Forces Memorial being unveiled later aims to commemorate their heroism.

I don't deny that, plk123. That wasn't my point. It doesn't make you a hero though, just practical and sensible.

I suspect the allegory to heroism was that in fleeing (and thereby ending up in the armed forces of HMG), many Poles 'heroically' fought for a cause that ended in a return of nil for many of them. With hindsight, the practicality and sense of it is debatable, but the heroism of the motive and intent less so.

A souviner book was produced for the Polish Armed Forces Memorial (which was co-edited by yours truly) and published by the Polish Underground Movement (1939-45) Study Trust on 1 September 2009 and is now available from Amazon.

Proceeds of the book sale are going to help fund the annual maintance of the Memorial site —not to make the editors richer than we are already or to my personal anti-Polish Benevolent Fund ;-)

To flee so that you will just live the next day is not honorable.
To flee so that you can fight again! Isn't that honorable?
Ofc more honorable would be fighting until a panzer makes you flat but that's also what is called as stupidity...
