The Czech Republic has taken over the rotating presidency of the European Union, and immediately grappled with a potential crisis.

It issued a statement urging Russia and Ukraine not to let their dispute over gas prices disrupt supplies to the EU.

We will see something new. I hope that Czech leadership is going to be successful.

Prime Minister Topolanek also announced that an EU diplomatic mission, led by the Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, would travel to the Middle East in the coming days to try to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Gaza.

Well Czech foreign minister is very similar to me heheh in some way :) I believe that Czechs have a lot to offer. They are one of our the closest parters in europe ... in different issues .

Czechs have done a great job during the last years. No weeping, just doing good. Other Slavs should follow their example.

Sasha, do you consider "stirring the pot" and "weeping" differently?

"Schwarzenberg"? Sounds German....
But then it's Vaclav "Klaus" too! :)

I like that the Czechs announced they want the EU more active in the ME...they want to send a delegation there right now...just on whose side! Hopefully not licking Israels arse too..

Schwarzenberg, sounds Austrian. The rhetoric is lined up heavily against Israel but we've seen that before.

We are in good hands with the Czechs (no need to moderate this)

To be honest Czechs are rather more pro Israeli than rest of Europe...

Anny way Czechs share many views with Poles and I hope their presidency will be successful.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-01/02/content_10591355.htm,

This is a well-balanced account of what lies in store for the new steerers of the EU.

My comment, well, I agree with Prince when he said that they are more pro-Israeli than Sarkozy was. Sarkozy won an award in 2008 for his efforts in international diplomacy. I can only but wonder what the competition was like. Topolanek is an unknown quantity, it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Being Czech, probably knedle and beer. Oh, and some fried cheese :)

Well EU is trying to be more independent on international arena and in middle east it will be more pro Palestinian than the USA ...

As to Topolanek I don't understand your strange attitude.
