Is Poland ready for the swine fever stuff?

I can see the news is talking about it, and I've learned enough Polish to see which countries are being referred to, but can't see what (if any) plans are in place. I'm diabetic and also asthmatic so in the UK I would be considered at risk and a priority for a vaccine if needed. How goes that here?

I couls be wrong , but i have a feeling that Poland is not as well prepared as the UK if this virus takes hold here , but i am sure they would get help from other EU countries if it got out of hand....

My advice then would be to speak to family about sending you some Tamiflu it's not expensive, but from what I gather it's in short supply here in the UK too. wildrover: but i am sure they would get help from other EU countries if it got out of hand.... Im sure they would, but be aware most countries wont have a large spare supply of this hanging around, it's up to individuals in Poland to take care of themselves, that's what people in the UK are doing (when I say people, I mean my family, friends and work colleagues).

There is no vaccine for this one, yet. Just the Tamiflu medicine that ShellyS mentioned. It's a general anti-viral medicine.

How is telling someone to stay in ignorant? The WHO says you can catch it by droplets so why wouldnt washing your hands be helpful? No need to be so bloody rude, the poster said they were worried so I suggested staying in as much as possible, not locking herself in a box for christ sake :P Your chances of sexually assaulting an animal are higher than catching swine flu, yes I know and if we followed any ordinary flu we could consider it a pandemic. I was merely offering advice to someone who is more prone to catch ill. Just shows how insensitive you are to another poster who is diabetic as well as asthmatic and considers themself as more susceptible.

bolek: others have a life, Others are blessed with healthy respiratory systems, the OP isn't, flu attacks the respiratory system so she is within her rights to be worried, on top of that she is diabetic which comes with a whole host of complications, so maybe you should re-think what you wrote.

bolek: some 200 people have died from this flu Not even that many. They are only suspected to have died from it. It's only about 10 people who have been confirmed to have died of A(H1N1). The others, while having died of illnesses related to flu, haven't necessarily died of this particular strain of flu. Test results are still being waited upon. There are 331 confirmed cases around the world. BevK, yes, it's a worry but so far no cases in Poland. Try to go about your normal life but maintain good hand hygiene etc, etc.

H1N1 is just another influenza. It's not as dangerous as they make it out to be in the media. Medicines are available everywhere. ;) Yes, sensational television. You may breathe now.

PAP reporting on Friday that an 8-year-old girl from the SW city of Wrocław (formerly Breslau) who returned from Mexico is suspected of having swine flu. Results of tests should be forthcoming shortly. Several cases have already been reproted in neighbouring Germany.

Wow caused a storm unintentionally! I'm actually more worried about my mum who was in hospital recently but Shelley is right that I am a little bit concerned. Mexico in general has a lot of people living in quite run down conditions who have this flu, looking at the footage it appears to be mainly affecting people without the benefits maybe some of us take for granted. I didn't realise that you can buy Tamiflu, so thanks, I will have a chat with my folks. Personally I think it's godsend for the news programmes rather than a real threat. (I do maintain good hand hygeine :) and it's not me who hawks and spits in the street outside :) )

i love the genus of the word "pandemic" A pandemic (from Greek pan all + demos people) is an epidemic of infectious disease that spreads through populations across a large region; for instance a continent, or even worldwide. the flu for an example is a pandemic. I persoanlly think that the word "pandemic" was formed from "PANic & epiDEMIC" Its all a setup by the NWO, trying to get the sheeple in line. The swine flu doesn't seem to be more dangerous than normal flu. Many people die every day from normal flu during the flu season. Why is no one talking about them? But panic about this? It's so ridiculous. Media wants to sell more of course. And that people compare this with SARS show that they don't know anything about infectious diseases. If I'd get SARS I would be worried. If I'll get the swine flu I will take paracetamol, go to bed and enjoy a good book. /Medical student who is really tired of media

Normal flu death figures won't be released for a while but in the last week many more people died in the UK of normal flu or complications caused by ordinary flu than have died of H1N1 around the world in the same time period. My friend is home in Poland at the moment and called me to ask if she needed to purchase masks in PL to bring back with her or did we have enough? Buy all non-prescription drugs you can find when you have a normal cold (or even go to the doctor etc.). In Sweden you would never been allowed to see a doctor for a normal cold. All masks do is incubate any virus and increase profits for a few pharmo companies. Around 12 thousand people die every year in the UK of "normal" flu.... whats up with the world its not like its been a slow news week. A quote from a Brit politicians aide made on 911 comes to mind, "a great day to bury bad news". With such a relative non story as this dominating global news coverage just what else is being dusted under collective carpets?

Look at the UK political news (can't speak for other countries) there is a massive amount going on and it's all negative for the Labour party. Quite a few MPs speaking out, plus ex-MPs. So it's easier for the government at the moment if the press is waffling on about 15 people having the flu rather than focussing on them. Poland is as ready for this outbreak of the flu as any other country. No one outside of USA/Mexico/Canada has had anything but a mild version of this flu.

This flu strain isn't even progressing at the rate that the "experts" thought it might. It's been a great big failure so far... ;)

No one is trying to insult anybody Pani Polska, but lets get all this in proper perspective, The Press and TV are having a field day selling newspapers etc, in scaring people. Its interesting that a lot of people have made a lot of money, just look at the price of some of the shares associated with medicines and blood. Lets just get on with the business of living and not paranoia. There were people who stocked up with food and water during the Y2 scare, people who went to the land of the missing during the bird flu scare and now we have people washing there hands every few seconds as a result of a swine flu. Its best to stay in bed all day otherwise you might get knocked over by a car or some other misadventure. Get a life will you.

Only in 1918 they didn't produce flu vaccines, they are already working on a vaccine for this one now, which will be available within the next 6 months.
