Racist text book for Polish schools

“How would you place Christians and Turks on a sinking ship so that only the latter drowned?”, reads a problem in a math textbook for Poland’s primary school pupils.

“On board a sinking ship there are fifteen Christians and fifteen Turks. In order to save the ship from going to the bottom, half of the crew needs to be thrown overboard. One of the Christians proposes that the whole crew form a circle and every ninth person jump overboard. How should the Christians place themselves so that only the Turks are drowned?”reads a problem, quoted the lay Catholic newspaper Tygodnik Powszechny.

The rather controversial problem appeares in The Mathematical Miniatures for Primary Schools, a manual for second to twelfth grade students who want to participate in the International Mathematical Kangaroo competition. The book was published in 2004 by Aksjomat Publishing House from the northern city of Torun.

“We did not try to exhort anyone to hate. What mattered to us was the mathematical model – the historical context was irrelevant. In order to solve the problem one needs to be acquainted with principles Maths, not the ways of murdering Turks,” said co-author and publisher of the manual Piotr Nodzynski, naively.

Quite terrible this math teacher, Russians or Germans would been "funny" atleast but Turks? I don't see anything "negative" in it even. Tho from my 1 sided Norwegian view it says "Horrible! Rasist!"

But given the kind of text books which appear in Polish schools, it is fairly understandable why a racist radio station might be popular in Poland.

Real Christians should have taken the following places: 5,6,7,8,9,12,16,18,19,22,23,24,26,27,30 The problem has an embedded deep Christian teachings of loving your neighbor as yourself, no matter what religion she/he confess. Correct answer would be self-sacrifice. It just depends how you look at it :)

This argument is not about WHO makes what claim, it is about whether there is a maths textbook that makes comments about drowning Turks and whether or not this kind of treatment of a nationality is reasonable, especially in the context of educating the young. The alleged maths question doesn't entirely make sense - I have met at least one atherist Turk and I used to work with a Turkish Christian convert. The question is supposedly about Christians versus Turks. If this whole situation were the other way around - a textbook in Turkey using an example of Muslims versus Poles, how would anyone here react?

Poles like to place themselves as tolerant, but they are the least tolerant after Russians... What does Turks and Christianity has to do with mathematics...but the writer and most Poles(not all though) always look for ways to place hate and anger in the minds of young kids. Unfortunately, these young kids are growing up, believing that Turks, Islam, Arabs, Blacks, Asians are the enemy and we should resist them from coming to our country. This is wrong..This is why Poland will never develop from the state it is now, cos the minds that are supposed to be the future of Poland are spending time nurturing hate instead of peace and development.

This is not racist. It was just a joke. And quite funny at that. Maybe if that was published in some Western country, it would be racist. But here, its just funny, because Poland is not racist country. And were is no rasism there is also no need for antiracism. We just dont care about these things. Yes, if you demand some special treatment because your skin is black or your hairs are red, you will be ridiculed. And rightly so.
