British journalism at it's best! *rolls eyes*

1. Picture of infantry fighting vehicle described as a Russian "military tank".

2. "Russia has provoked outrage in Poland" - hardly; all they provoked was
some good laughs and jokes on Polish internet portals :-)

3. "Red Army forces stormed a "Polish" beach"... erm... "Red Army"??? :-)

4. "Karol Karski, an MP from Poland's Law and Justice, is to table parliamentary
questions on Russia's war games and has protested to the European Commission."

Well, I don't know if that's true, but if it is then Karski should rather convince
president Kaczynski to organize military excercise in Poland simulating capturing
of Moscow :-)

5. "Ordinary Poles were outraged by news of the exercise and demanded a firm
response from the government." - all the "ordinary Poles" I know (including me)
were either completely indifferent or mildly amused :-)

Russian simulated nuclear attack on Poland

Apparently they did a simulated bombing of Gliwice town centre and totally flattened it. The estimated cost of the damage was 500zl (sorry seanus :-)

So it is true???

Well, apparently there was some joint Russian/Belarussian military
excercise with the landing on "Polish" beach simulated and the
defense of the gas pipeline excercise conducted, but the hysteria
of some of the newspapers is truly hilarious.

If Russian army wants to train the invasion of a country then what other
country than Poland should it be? Switzerland, Belgium or Laos perhaps?

When our army conducts defensive excercises then nobody is pretending
that the "aggressive" side in the simulation isn't Russia (and who else should
it be? Zimbabwe?).

Normal military business, nothing out of ordinary. I would be surprised if Russians
didn't train the attack on Poland (I would probably suspect then that they are
plotting something devious :-)).

No no no. When a bear charges the worst thing you can do is run away. They're fast and very curious you see. Firstly you must check whether the Russian is a brown one (slightly mucky) or a black one (very mucky). If it is the former you should lie down and play dead, unless you have evidence that it has been stalking you in which case pick up an old axle and belt the living sh*t out of it. If it is a black one do not play dead but make loud noises and make yourself look bigger. Do not climb a tree cos they are good at that too. If the Russian keeps on coming then offer it a bribe or resort to plan B with the axle. If the Ivan has a tactical nuclear weapon with it then do not panic. It is probably defective anyway.

As I have just said on the other thread, it's all about posturing and game playing. Russia just wants to remind Poland who's boss but that's bullying and no more. There is no level playing field.

Putin visited Tusk in Sopot and they seemed to forge cordial times. The Poles have more than enough experience with the Russians and they are just making noises. The Russians can be more crafty than that.

The Russian air force practised using weapons from its nuclear arsenal, while in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, which neighbours Poland, Red Army forces stormed a "Polish" beach and attacked a gas pipeline.

What? Red Army?!?! omg, i thought the ussr was gone forever...... yikes!

Reminds me of one simpsons episode:

Russian UN Rep: The Soviet Union will be pleased to offer amnesty to your wayward vessel.
USA Un Rep: Soviet Union? I thought you guys broke up.
Russian UN Rep: Nyet! That's what we wanted you to think, hahahahahaha!

Russian nuclear maneuvers on Poland
A slightly more balanced article

The Economist

Polish, Baltic and other officials will meet in Warsaw shortly to discuss the significance of the exercises

Russia’s armed forces may be ramshackle, but many European members of NATO are in poor shape too. The alliance’s ability to defend the Baltic states depends almost wholly on American involvement.

Good catch! :))

Also...

The Russian air force practised using weapons from its nuclear arsenal

The journalist didn't even bother himself to find out what kind of delivery vehicle was used for nuclear warheads nowadays.

Poland should be neutral on current military alliances. That`s what i warmly suggests, for all sorts of reasons.

Same suggestion goes for Baltic states

Latvia to stage "retaliatory" military exercises

Serbia`s B92 NEWS / 2 November 2009 | 09:47 | Source: Ria novosti
http://www.b92.net/eng/news/world-article.php?yyyy=2009&mm=11&dd=02&na v_id=62753

RIGA -- Latvia is to hold large-scale military exercises next summer, in response to the Russian-Belarusian strategic exercises, held in September, a TV channel said.

The Latvian TV3 channel quoted Latvian Defense Minister Imants Liegis as saying the decision to hold the drill was already taken, although it had not been yet set what military units would be involved.

The Russian-Belarusian drill, called Zapad (West) 2009, was held on September 18-29, involving about 12,500 service personnel, 40 aircraft and 200 pieces of military equipment.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the plan for the exercises, which was developed in the late 1990s in a bid to achieve greater political, economic and military integration between the two neighbors, was "purely defensive."

U.S., Baltic States: Military Exercises in Russia's Buffer Zone

November 4, 2009 | 2149 GMT
http://www.stratfor.com/analysis/20091104_us_baltic_states_military_ex ercises_russias_buffer_zone

The United States has plans to engage in military exercises with the Baltic states annually, starting in September or October 2010. The drills are another way in which the United States is pressuring Russia and, as such, are likely to increase tensions between Washington and Moscow.

The U.S. proposal to hold military exercises with the Baltic states is the latest move in Washington's overall effort to establish influence in Russia's near abroad as part of the countries' ongoing standoff on the Iranian nuclear issue. With Moscow unwavering in its military and technical support of Iran, the United States has increased its cooperation with countries all over Russia's periphery. Washington's efforts have ranged from U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's series of visits and provocative statements in the region to considering the installation of Patriot missiles in Poland to U.S. Defense Department official Alexander Vershbow's effort to increase military cooperation with Ukraine and Georgia.

all this isn`t good for Poland. Poland`s military neutrality on current global alliances is warmly suggested
