Warsaw - city travelcard for foreigners/passport photo booths?

bev   Dec 4, 09, 10:15 /  #
Sorry can't find a thread. My card runs out on the 6th and not sure how to get the new type - or where to get a passport picture taken in Warsaw! Can you help please?

You can still recharge your old card until the end of December. But queues are already growing for the new photocard, so perhaps it's better not to leave it until January when it won't be possible to charge the old style cards.

To get the new card, assuming you're foreign and don't have a PESEL, you should download and print the pdf form from the ZTM website.

There's a photo booth on the main concourse of Dw. Centralny, and a shop downstairs (on galeria poludniowa) where you can get a photo done while you wait.

You can create valid passport photos with idphoto4you.com website.
It uses face detection to set size and position of head.
It is free.
It knows numerous standards.

Does that mean that if you recharge your old car, say, in the middle of this month (December) for the next three months (the longest period possible), you may use your old one until the middle of March, puttng off getting the new type until then and thus avoiding queues in December?

As far as I know yes. The literature the ZTM published about the new photocards said that kiosks etc will stop recharging old cards on 1 Jan. Cards recharged before that date should be OK. Whether there's special rules about 3-monthly (as opposed to monthly) cards is anybody's guess. They didn't mention that, and may well not even have thought about it.

It's probably OK to do that - if the kiosk charges an old-style card for three months it should be valid, but to be on the safe side, I'd only charge it for a month if I didn't have a new-style card. Getting the cards isn't difficult, but I've noticed that the queues at Metro Ratusz-Arsena³ have been steadily growing, so it's worth sorting it out before the last minute.

edit
A high proportion of 3-monthly cards are used by civil servants, doctors, and certain other public sector workers who (if their job qualifies them for it) get a small discount and pay for them by salary deduction. The tax office stopped charging the old-style cards for their staff a couple of months ago (not least because some of the staff used to sell them on, for a small profit). So using an old-style card in March might not break any rule, but might cause awkwardness with ticket inspectors who won't have seen one for a while.

Better to play it safe.

Thanks for your reply, Jonni. It has promted me to consult the ZTM site where I've read that old cards will still be valid, but they'll only serve for recharging any type of long-term tickets (beginning with a 24 hour one) except for 30-day and 90-day ones which will need a personalised card with a photo on it. All types of long-term tickets will be valid for a new card as well. A new type of a long-term ticket, a 14-day one, which can be charged to both cards is introduced on the 1st of January 2010.

Anyway, I've recharged my old card in December for another three-month period.

Ziemowit's posts and mine have the answer. The rules are the same for students and other people with concessionary fares.

If you have credit on your card, they will accept it (with your legitimacja). When your credit runs out you will need a new-style card.

If you have a student discount, you will still need to carry your legitimacja with your new style card.
