The Polish restaurants and pubs serving food sprouting up across the British Isles were originally established mainly to serve the growing immirgant community but are being frequented by a growing number of locals. A case in point is Pol Taste, a newly opened restaurant operated by the Cichoński family in Kidderminster, a town in England’s West Midlands area. According to owner Greg Cichoński, 41, the eatery is proving a hit with customers developing a taste for Polish-style “gulasz”, sauerkraut dishes, breaded pork cutlets, chicken soup and red cabbage. “I wasn’t sure how our food would go down but now we’re seeing more British people in here,” Cichoński explained. It cost the family £50,000 (nearly $90,000) to refurbish the premises of a former filling station into a 40-seat restaurant.

Some of those dishes can be a bit hit and miss. I was a veggie for 8 years until I was on a trip to Poland and just decided to get back into meat. I really don't like that jelly stuff on the pork - there is nothing nice about that.

On a recent trip, I had duck roasted with pears... was very memorable dish :P

lol, not really the best time to give up being a veggie when you go to Poland, i found a lot of the food was veggie based :).

yeah i know what you mean, i think part of it is not knowing exactly what your putting in your mouth!!!

Of all the food I have tasted so far I haven't found anything I didn't like so much that I wouldn't try it again. Favourites include krokiety, kotlet, goł±bki (hence the reason I had a bash at cooking that :) and bigos, there are more though. :)

And yes, of course, the beer was always going to become popular. ;)

wow don't blame you, at least you gave up veggie for a dish of quality, although what makes me laugh is that you've gone from one extreme to the other. First you won't touch meat as its cruel, then your eating baby calf. Have you been watchin to much 'F' Word and Janette Street Porter :)

I hope that tastes better than it sounds, it sounds like school dinner / peasant food :-)

Regardless of your feelings on anything else you should try some Polish food. I think you'll like some of it... :)

What's stopping you from trying it? Really, don't go knocking it until you've tried it.

See above. It was the mention of red cabbage that really reminded me of the school canteen :-)

There's nothing wrong with peasant style food I guess. Like Greek food, which I love!! I guess I'd describe that as peasnat style too - it is pretty simple.

There's a Greek restaurant in Hoxton that tries to serve Greek Food in an up-market / silver service style and to be honest, it just doesn't work. And it's not cheap either.

Good. :) Try a variety and then let us know your thoughts on them. :)

I think that people aren't sure of Polish food because they don't know what ingredients are in some of the dishes. Sometimes some Brit friends of mine will ask what's in Polish food (like goł±bki, bigos...) and when I explain they actually say that it might be nice. So now my challenge to them is to try it...and usually they like it. :)

I see polish food as fuel and nothing really more, The beer is godlike as is the vodka but the food seems very unhealthy with too many things fried, I tried Bigos after much persuasion and decided that it is vile, Tastes ok but the texture made me urge.

I miss a good old English meal (tikka masala)

Then for your sorry stomach the morning after, why not try a nice bowl of flaki? That's supposed to be the cure, isn't it?

Well, at it's basic, all food is fuel when you think about it. ;)

Bigos is perhaps not for everyone then... ;)

Krysia had a very interesting recipe on here last night and I copied it..

I have to admit, I was never taught how to make these. but I am very
good at learning this, and I wish I could invite some over to try them, but
I will ask my brother ( our family tape worm) who loves food to help me
out.. Krysia's recipe will definately make him happy.

Potato dumplings.

we know the potato pancake recipe and use bacon on them.. but no sour creme.

which one, the regular or low fat recipe..

I was thinking , couldnt we sub egg whites ( still the egg)
or here Egg beaters.. ?
for the oil cooking spray ?

turkey bacon? or just leaner bacon altogether?

when I make cakes I use applesauce in place of the oil.. they are still
really soft and still really good :)
