It's common knowledge that the sell-by date is there only to make people buy things more frequently and a way of the supermarkets covering their backsides. It's got nothing to do with food hygiene and is going to be banned pretty soon. Anyway, beef can hung for anything up to 45 days so a few more days in a porous container in your fridge will actually improve the flavour.

Ksysia: It oculd have been past the bb date. thats a bain of any persons life living in Poland, check the sell by date on all products!! Youll be sorry if you didnt. meat usually stinks to high heaven within a day if not frozen straight away. Whilst im at it product lebelling. Ive bought the same product (Nan Active baby formula) but in different sizes the formula has different mixing levels on the packaging and this is for babies. What the FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK??

I put the name here to show that it was not ASDA line - ASDA is capable of spoiling even the stuff that they buy and sell already packaged, and even if it's alcohol which by definition does not rot in the bottle. milk in red caps - never buy that. only buy Dairy Crest from the Hungarians. And you're right, Wrocław, there are things of sale that are off in Poland as well. Especially in small shops and Carrefour. But I guess small shops are like that everywhere - in England I bought milk that was stinking several time in such shops. I couldn't tell because of the carton box. :(

Its illegal to sell such products - stop lying please. Ive never bought off milk in England in all my 30 years of living there, ive never bought off milk in Poland either (for that matter) as its UHT but the meat is a real issue. Lets keep the conversation where its relevant shall we. You obviously have issues with the UK lets hear them in all their glory as apposed to off milk, come on dont be afraid we wont bite..

It may be illegal, but this English chap definitely had sold me off milk. I will not concentrate on praising you just so you can pet your insecurity - there are good things and bad things. I will tell them all.

Ksysia: Wine is dirt cheap and there are even some wined that are possible to drink - Lussac St. Emillion for example. Champagne is cheaper than in Poland even in absolute values. I take it you haven't been to Ireland. Wine is very expensive here, except for Aldi and Lidl. A few weeks I got the chance to compare: a decent Chablis costs in Holland about 7 Euros; in Ireland a lesser Chablis costs 15 to 16 Euros. Chardonnay the same and try to find a Riesling...The range of wines is, like a lot of things, very limited, unfortunately. Ksysia: Lager is rather tasteless Some of them are, others aren't. Depends on what you choose. Ales are good, but not that great though. Ksysia: It's not possible to buy Jacob's coffee But why would you buy German coffee in the first place? (Dutchman speaking) You should get Douwe Egberts for your daily use of coffee. Much better quality anyway. If you go to Lidl and you buy that Goldbrand poundpack for 2 Euros and 69 cents, you'll have Jacob's Kaffee, only with a different package. Don't know if they have a Lidl in London and how much that would be in pounds though. M-G (thinks Ksysia should come to Dublin, just for laughs)

Ksysia: Milk is very bad, it tastes like water with some powder milk. Polish milk is hideous its mostly UHT treated, at least ours comes from cows. Ksysia: Pork is bad Pork is bad everywhere you go, We're not really a pork eating nation as we mostly eat beef. Ksysia: There's only one kind of chicken that resembles chicken, the yellow skinned outdoor reared chicken. Same in Poland Ksysia: Tesco's will be closed All supermarkets are open till at least 8pm Ksysia: Coming to a foreign country, I had to learn everything anew. Which bread is edible, which is good. I had to do that, unfortunately bread is off our menu dude to all the polish variety's seeming to resemble asbestos.

M-D - I will go to Dublin one day, for sure. hm, two years ago I would have jumped at the Egberts coffee, but now the helpful Kurd has German coffee, I will just carry on. And Ritter chocolate, too. I've experimented with all the brands in Sainsbury's and all were bitter :'( Oh, I can believe that ales are not that good - my man brought a sample pack of Belgian beers once, I liked Grimbergen Ultima the best. I imagine yours are just as good. dnz: All supermarkets are open till at least 8pm quote correctly - I said all except Tesco's is closed at 5 - supermarkets are open even 24h, sure, but they fall in the category of Tesco's.

To put things into perspective: you say Ksysia is moaning, and maybe she is. But less so than a lot of expats in Poland who open threads on PF about how horrible PL is, what they hate about PL, how stupid and / or devious the Polish people are, etc. etc. I think Ksysia is fully entitled to have her say about what she likes or dislikes about the UK. And yes, I have also had the honour to buy foodstuffs in the UK which were past their sell-by date. Actually, even in Asda and Tesco a lot of products (meat included) usually have a sell-by date to expire within a few days of the purchase. E.g. it's the 15th, the meat is to expire by the 18th. So I just take a long hard look at it and put it away. Why wait so long before putting the stuff on the shelves? I don't get it.

I did know that the "fresh" eggs you buy in the shops are generally 6 months old and have been stored for months in a warehouse in Zimbabwe(!) before being sent over here to be sold as "fresh". It's all such a nice thought. M-G (refuses to eat food anymore - boycott food!)

European food is not as nice as Asian but I will probably not move there, hhhmmm why not....? Maybe I will move there, if for nothing else the food :) Italian and French are nothing in comparison to Nepalese, Indian, Thai or Chinese.... mmmMMMmmm...

Poles do it in America also Constantally complaining that things are better back in Poland. Then why have they abandoned thier county???? greed and money is it really worth it then? I think it's all about this "status quo". Whoever leaves Poland to another country to work is better than everyone else. If someone comes to Poland and complain, they get all mad, but when Poles come to other countries and complain, it's allright. Go back to Poland Ksysia, it'll be better and healthier for you. And better for everyone.

sledz: Constantally complaining that things are better back in Poland. People constantly moan about how things were better back in their youth everywhere around the world. The reason is that everything is better and brighter and greener when you are young. It's not a polish trait. It's a privilege of an old age, that's why young ones should have the courtesy not to moan. It's not connected with your living place or country you come from. It's the carefreeness that many people miss in their lifes.
