There is to be a consultation process on the proposal, but in his article Mr Murphy writes of the demographic challenge facing Scotland, with an ageing population and the need to recruit in sectors such as tourism.
Immigrants coming to Scotland could earn extra points towards UK citizenship applications.

The good thing for immigrants is that we have a relatively stable tourism industry and jobs are there for the taking. It's not like we are filled with seasonal work which is good for those who are just passing through. Competition is fierce but at least the jobs are there.

What about the millions of Welsh, English and Irish unemployed? Why does the Scottish tourism industry have to go abroad? Or is that a stupid question?

I've seen people from the Baltic States plus Poland working in Inverness and they do a good job. They are probably paid fractionally less than most natives but they are willing to be so. As my brethren said, Scotland has different demographics and that can't be overstated.

Immigrants steal Google in Ireland

The employment rate is a better guide - now at 74.4%, higher than that of the UK most of the EU.

Jesus christ. The author wants more immigrants even though Scotland has mass unemployment? He should be up for treason.

Oct-Dec 2008 employment was 75.4%... That's high especially in this climate.

Just to reassure you RN, we took on a new Polish girl a couple of weeks ago, we've just increased the hours of another of our Polish workers (he's doing great! :) but we did employ a Scottish chap too. ;)

LMGTFY- great site. ;)

Bravo, well played.

That is not really a good statistic to use, the EU is in the grips of a recession.

Come here genius, what happens when the immigrants age and need pensions? Who is going to pay for that? More immigrants? Eastern Europe has a dangerously low birth rate, what will they do?

Robbing Peter to pay Paul, if you ask me.

The point is to encourage immigrants here who want to become citizens. What will happen when anyone wants a pension in the future? Pensions are private things nowadays, if you haven't got one you're foolish.
Scotland's birth rate isn't tremendously high either, hence why we need to boost our population.

Why would you want to do that? Explain to me why it is good thing?

Why and what benefits will it bring?

dtaylor5632

Sure sure, not wanting to be a second class citizen in your own nation equates to terrorism. You can claim the moral high ground all you want, at the end of the day you are still a British subject.

Private pension? Because the state one won't buy you bread and milk by the time I get round to retiring.

If you're referring to why we might want more immigrants - I refer you to a previous post, Scotland is way underpopulated...

Now I need to explain what benefits boosting the population will bring...no, I think you can search that one yourself, figure it out for yourself..

Workers pay tax - tax pays for care for those that can't work.

Use the search bar and look for "noimagination" - its all been said before.

Why do you need things explained so much? Is it because you have probably not a clue about Scottish demographics or politics? Or because you spout more verbal diarrhea about how bad the world is?

My guess is all of the above.

Asking why people need private pensions....twat.

Which is quite a good thing. Spend a week in Dublin or London. Every hear the term "importing poverty". You will in the future, as that is what you are advocating.

I am not asking for a google search, I am asking you why you think Scotland needs to import more foreigners, especailly considering there are quite a number of Scots unemployed.

dtaylor5632

The immigrants will need pensions too, ever hear of a state pension you gormless dress wearing goon? Who will pay for it? More immigrants. There was actually a House of Lords report recently which stated immigrants in the UK had a negative effect on the economy.

That the state pension won't buy bread and milk? Are you kidding? That's a disaster!

RevokeNice:
there are quite a number of Scots unemployed.

Something that should be pointed out here is this: However many people in Scotland are unemployed they are not all Scots so your statement should read "There are quite a number of people in Scotland who are unemployed". Not all Scots.

Scotland needs foreigners because (yet again...) we are underpopulated...One more time for an encore?

RevokeNice:

You aren't paying attention, the state pension is worthless, certainly will be when I retire. It's Private Pensions here now RN.

I won't continue a debate with someone who only reads part of the posts and expects answers for things that have already been answered.

Right, I still fail to see why Scotland needs to be importing foreigners. I meant to say that have a low population density is quite a good thing. Try Dublin or London for a while. You will be grateful to get back to bonnie wee Scotland.

In order to do so I would need to clog up the thread with Clipart.
