UK In Recession - It's Official

Actually it's quite serious considering over 2 million people are out of work, I've got 2 friends that have lot their jobs, one is a solicitor and the other is a financial advisor - not good.

I'm interesting to know what the media in Poland are saying about the financial crisis?

The best thing you can do is be optimistic. If there is a recession (which there is mostly because too many people are prone to negativity), people with ideas, innovation, dedication and optimism will pull through. We're doomed!

osiol: too many people are prone to negativity If anybody mentions the R word they should pay a fine into the communal drinking kitty. Fines will increase exponentially during the day. This will promote optimism and also give me some peace and quiet to finish this report on how my supplier may be going bust as a result of the Recession... Doh - 50p in.

Even when trying to be optimistic, some people only think of what they don't want to happen. This is just not good enough. I am still hoping to buy a new yacht in the next year or so.

The time has come for each and every one of you to decide whether you're gonna to be the problem or whether you're gonna be the solution... kick out the jams... I might get a hovercraft as well as a yacht. I've always fancied a hovercraft.

I recently changed jobs (I work in banking) and where I used to work, they're making people redundant. I was very lucky to move when I did. I now work in debt management and have to deal with people that are way over their overdraft limits, can't pay their loans, mortgages and credit cards. It's not nice as you can imagine. The sad thing is that most of the people that are struggling with credit cards etc never had the means in the first place to maintain payments. Banks have been throwing money at people for years and the debt on their books is mainly of their own making. What staggers me on a daily basis is the number of people from countries like Poland that owe so much money and are in way over their heads. The bank I work for have even had to hire people for their foreign language skills - that's how serious the problem is. I'd also be interested to know how the British recession is being covered in the Polish media and also what is the attitude of the Polish to debt ?

Recession? Never heard of that. I don't have a time to read a news since I've lost my job, my house,my car, my gf and my dog... But hey! Always look on the bright side of life...;-D

Its no so easy to be granted bank loans in Poland, banks are generally quite thorough with their lending criteria. Most Poles that i know who are in debt, owe the loan sharks. You have the A4 sheets posted on every street corner with their little slips you pull off at the bottom. Very tempting for poor people. Polish media are exagerating the crisis in the UK.

It is being tentatively covered. I had a discussion this morning about contingency planning in the field of publishing. I agree with WB, the Polish media has blown it out of all proportion. The truth is that only those firms with direct dealings with foreign companies have been affected in a meaningful/tangible way. Others are aware of an impending 'mini-crisis' but Poland hasn't been part of international trade networks like America has for so many decades. It has been used as an excuse to lay off workers and streamline companies. It's just another pretext. The UK is being harder hit. However, some lines of work remain relatively unaffected.

Why would they exaggerate ? To try and stop people from coming here to work ? And while the Polish (and other foreign nationals) I've spoken to recently may not be in debt to loan sharks, a frightening amount are going for IVAs and even considering bankruptcy. Seanus: It is being tentatively covered. What affect are they saying it will have on the Polish currently working here ?
