I told you they would lose if Sledz wasn't the bid leader. Serves 'em right.

Rio is such a vibrant, new city. I'm sure they will get the spotlight.

Yes those favelas are just so chic... not.

I suppose we could have mugging added to the list of Olympic sports though

I always wonder where such countries like Brazil get all the billions from to pay for such an event like world championships or now Olympia...

It must be a slap in the face to all the millions of poor people in the streets of Rio actually.

Such events should only given to countries who can actually afford them without neglecting other things!

It's not a perfect city but it's got some good things about it. It's got lots of scantly clad people on beaches. That's enough to get them the Olympics right there...

They just don't have the money for more clothing! ;)

Fair point;)

It is a wonderful city, don't get me wrong. But the poverty just a few blocks behind the luxury hotels of Ipanema and Cocacabana is a bit of a shock.

Or someone stole their clothes when they were having a dip;)

Added incentive to hump it quickly throught the marathon.

I understand your point but these type of events can bring about much needed investment, tourism, jobs, prospects and development

poverty

I am hoping that if Rio gets it they would have to act on the poverty and the gang violence....and not just bulldoze some favelas.

That's a good point...getting the games will draw attention to some of the social problems in Rio. Maybe it will help the city out.

How many murders, muggings and rapes? 10,000? 20,000?

What about London in 2012? London's in there somewhere, which ruined it for Madrid :p

For a few years ;) then the locals spend 30 years paying for it in increased council tax (or its local equivalent). They said the same about the Canary Wharf redevelopment, but how many Isle of Dogs residents got jobs there? Hardly any!

I'm glad I left London in time. I don't think I ever met a single person there who "backed the bid". Why the hell can't they just use purpose-built facilities in Athens every four years, and let each competing country contribute to its upkeep (and share in any profits)? Makes far more sense.

In the long run it would be a real boost to the economy. Brings in mucho dinero. That's why countries clamor to hold the Olympics.
