I live in Hamtramck. As DrCherry says, there are lots of new Polish immigrants here. You can still shop in Polish stores, party at Polish nightclubs (and go to Polish Mass the next day), and hear Polish spoken on the street. Detroit's Polish/English-language newspaper is based in Hamtramck, as is the Polish American Congress--Michigan Division and the Piast Institute. And I'm always happy to give the Polish Hamtramck tour if you're visiting.

You know I have a question. I intend to study in Detroit (WSU- it is the cheapest of good schools) as I have lived there from August 2005 to July 2006, and I felt in love with the city. The problem is I do not have enough money to study there. I wonder if you know any possibility of very cheap housing, or somebody that needs a house help (taking care of children, some work in the garden, preparing a meal from time to time a meal, of course as a student I would not be available all the time) for allowing me to live with her/his family. Or maybe somebody that would help poor Polish student with any hepl (I do not mean money).

If any of you can help me, or now somebody that would help me please let me know!

Otherwise I will be forced to abandon an idea of studing in my favorite city where great people live, at least as far as I know .

Hamtramck, that's where my inlaws live. It's still got a lot of Polishness, but some muslims, Hindus and Arabs have infiltrated to a certain extent.

Hello people. If you are looking for a place to rent, the Hamtramck Citizen news paper is now on-line at: www hamtramckcitizen.com/

You can view the classified ads on line. The paper is published every Wednesday. Sadly, now in English only.

My grandparents were all born in Poland and emigrated to Hamtramck around 1915. We lived in Hamtramck for a few years, then moved to Detroit. Lots of Polish neighborhoods in Detroit back around the end of WW2.

Hamtramck has largely lost its Polish flavour. Last time I was through a few months ago there were still a couple of Polish restarants and shops, Pączki Day is a big deal once a year, but the general ambience is that of a blighting American inner-city neighbourhood with plenty of dollar stores, Yemeni women in long black frocks and a few funky bars.
TV cameramen covering Pączki Day artificially created a Polish atmospehre with close-ups of a sign with Poland Street on it and the Dom Związkowy neon.

Most of Polish moved from Hamtramck to Sterling Heights.

Anyone know all the words to a bouncy polka called "There's a city called Hamtramck"? I can recall only some of them.

PolishIzzy - Polish moved everywhere, not only Sterling Height. But you right, generally direction to the North.

Now, there is another paper - bilingual weekly newspaper "Polish Times / Czas Polski" - 36 pages - classifieds ads, information, events, photos, and other. The paper is published every Wednesday. This year we celebrate 2nd anniversary in May. Everybody welcome, tickets - $65 (under 21 - $55) There is also website: mypolishtimes.com
Subscription for 6 month - $30, $50 - 1 year, $80 - 2 years. (by phone 313-721-3369 as well on website by Paypal)

Under the Eagle (Pod Orłem) in Hamtramck......

Anyone from MI been there lately? I haven't been there in almost two years and was wondering if it was still there. The only reason I ask is because Hamtramck (im told) is being taken over by ****** people doing ****** things.

Going to MI in August and was definitely going to stop in.......

We really liked the staff at Pod Orłem last time. Thanks for the suggestion and we will definitely check that place out too when we visit.

Well that makes me feel a little better to know it's not rapidly getting worse.....
