Good morning,

I was curious, why would someone leave Poland for the US?

Any input is helpful and thanks in advance,

Sarah

Ask that question from your parents,or grandparents. Why did they leave?

The question was about Poland, not about the occupied territory called PRL.

Maybe that is why Poles go to Ireland, there are palm trees there?. :)

I see that this thread is not really about the topic.
Why would anyone go to America?
America is a great country and it is not such a great place to go since Bush has dragged it down.
People do not need a reason to travel last time I looked but to live somewhere you need opportunity.
America has lost it's "land of opertunity, home of the free and brave" thing with Bush. I hope Obama can restore the world's faith in America.

Culture

Every country and every individual has culture. It is a matter of perspective. The US has its own cultures and those of other cultures. It is those other cultures that people took to the US that become diluted or just estranged from developments in the countries from which immigrants to the US took them.

Palm trees are very nice. I had a couple of real beauties to look at, palm trees I mean, when I lived in Izumo. Chilling on the balcony, drinking a beer on a warm day and looking at palm trees, heaven!! That was then

Hello, my father left Poland for America in 1945, after the liberation. He was 16. Rescued from a concentration camp. His entire family was killed before his eyes by Nazis. They spared him because they used him for work. After the liberation, he had nowhere to go. An American soldier sponsored him to come the the USA and he came. That was over 50 years ago, and today, he has 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. I am one of the 6 kids. We absolutely love and respect our father, and are grateful that he left his beloved homeland for a chance to start anew.. otherwise we wouldn't exist, lol..

palm tress are not really trees but grass.

Most trees are dicotyledons. Palms, like lillies (in the widest sense of the term), grasses (and their allies as some people call sedges and rushes), bromeliads and so on, are monocots. I wouldn't go as far as to say that palms are grass.

You can't mow a palm. Lawns don't give you dates or coconuts.

Maybe this person has the same kind of question I do. Let me try:

My friend's parents came to the United States from Poland about 12 years ago. What are likely reasons for this?

Maybe Poland is not cracked up to be in what you people think. Why are so many poles trying to enter the US.. My parents came here in the early 1900, they never looked back.
Maybe people always think that the grass is always greener on the other side.

Palm trees are not grown for wood work.. They are meant to bear fruit and sway in the breeze. And make Pina Coladas

Yes, Poland has not changed at all since the mid 1800s.
Do you think if they looked back they would be able to see it? all they way from the U.S of A?

I would much prefer a blade of grass falling on me than a palm tree.

I liked Frania's answer. They had to have a reason to leave Poland. Even today, Poles are looking for sponsors to come to the USA. I realize that some go back.. But the majority stay. I suppose that there sour grapes in a lot of people.

Poland is doing much better now, than it was in the past. Most immigration occurred 10-30 years ago, when a job in poland was tough, or the pay was hilariously low compared to what could be earned in the US.

Most people who immigrated were common folk who lived in villages, and had a choice to do a long commute to a bigger city for low pay, or work in the fields and be a poor hardworking farmer forever. Hence the lines in front of the US Embassy were packed each and every day.

But the Polish economy got better, the zloty appreciated, and all of the sudden the US wasnt as great as it could be. But immigration shifted more so to EU when the borders opened up. If it weren't for Poland being in the EU, the US would still be "gold" and immigrants lining up.

You guys dis the US, but most have not been here, have not seen the Polish communities and all they've aspired & accomplished. Had the same people been stuck in PL, their kids would not be college graduates, they wouldn't have 2-3+ homes, luxury cars, vacations, etc. They made their lives much better by coming here. I thank my parents for immigrating, because I would not be who I am today, if they had remained in Poland.

Although the economy here sucks, as it does mostly everywhere now, you can't judge just the current, the past is what made today.

Why does it always come down to "my country's great, yours sucks"?

North America is a great place (for the most part) and so is Poland (for the most part)

It reads like some of you are trying to justify why people left here for there.
Life was crap for a lot of people so we went to America, where there was opertunity.
Life is better here now and America is suffering.
Such is life.
I look forward to Americans coming BACK here for work and complaining :)
