There is always work for people with the right skills.

True, but compared to a few years ago not 10 people are applying for the job but 10000. The competition is much fiercer and the companies are taking advantage of this. You work longer for less money. Scrappleton is right: the job market is horrible right now. And this is also true for the self-employed.

In Southern California the job market is much worse in some of the high-desert areas.
An elementary school had a part-time job opening for a cafeteria helper. The salary was a little over minimum wage. Surprisingly, over 800 people applied for the position.

A sincere thanks PF, for putting up with me FIVE terrific years, muah!

Well, yeah but I like a lot of younger Poles as I see them as pretty friendly and cool in general. Don't hate the US by default like most EU d.bags. More Slavs here is not necessarily a bad thing at all. Pole / Czech / Slovak Americans are smart, hard workers. Unlike British Americans.

All I can say is check back in about 2 - 3 years and things should be rolling better by then. Particularly for IT, nursing.. anything medicine.

Just be careful, I ran into this article here about H2 visas

Guest Workers Inc.: Fraud and Human Trafficking

Workers, labor organizers, lawyers, and policy makers say that the program, designed to open up the legal labor market and provide a piece of the American dream to immigrants, has instead locked thousands into a modern-day form of indentured servitude. Congressman Charles Rangel has called the guest worker program “the closest thing I’ve ever seen to slavery.”

What about construction work? shouldn't be that affected, not that it would be anything for me, but my bf use to work with that in the states, and I guess there's always a need for people in that field, or am I wrong?!

It depends on where you go. There's a construction boom where I'm at but it's tapering off just a little, It's not too bad. A new skyscraper is going to be started soon so that will employ a lot of people. They are building businesses left and right. Not as many houses as a year ago are being built, but commercial properties are being developed and lots of new retailers are springing up. We've been in a multi million dollar boom for years.

Its all union work
And with all the Ironworkers laid off now,, some members would travel 300 miles to come build it.

No chance of anybody working on that jobsite without a union card during its construction.

Unless youre living in a "right to work" state like Alabama or Florida without unions that pay low wages.

I'm in the recession proof part of the US :D
My city was voted second most recession proof city in the US or something like that. I'm pretty sure this is a "right to work state". People working construction here make good enough money to afford pretty decent stuff, so, I guess wages aren't too low. Unions are rackety anyway. They just drive prices up kind of like the way insurance corporations do :D
