I think Russians drink more. The average Polish guy goes to work during the day. The average Russian guy drinks a bottle on a bench. (and no, I'm not talking about homeless people)

Even Ireland drink more than Poland.

I use to live in Lithuania and they make us look like teetotallers.
Any morning you go to the shop, you see work men cueing up to buy whatever is the cheapest alcohol on offer that day, usually some kind of Vodka.

The Baltic States are reputed to drink the most. I'd probably say Russians but I haven't seen enough of Poland for me to make an accurate assessment. The older generation love their vodka here. My landlord gets sozzled every 2nd day. Out comes the acoustic guitar and ole!!

Depends on how they drink.
Using regular glasses (200 mL or more) Russians tend win.
Using small shot glasses (50 mL or less) Poles tend to win.

Good point Darius. Poles love to 'hatch it'. The Russians prefer to labour with bigger measures. Brits lag well behind, worrying about the effects of a 25ml 1/2 measure. Lightweights compared to Slavs.

I knew a Russian man who downed a 750 ml bottle of vodka all in one swig. He was then rushed to the hospital where he immediately had his stomach pumped. Barely escaped with his life.

One won a competition by drinking four bottles in one hour.He died immediately after he won the prize while his competitors were transported to hospital where they barely escaped death.

There are more Russians than Poles, therefore Russians drink more. This is about all drinks, isn't it? I suppose a few Russians might drink a little bit of water, coffee, tea or orange juice. It's not all vodka, right?

Yes I do, many people don't drink alcohol or only sometimes.

small group of people drink a lot.

In normal houses people don't drink/wine beer after work or as addition to dinner

Yeah, tequila can really distort things. That's a demonic drink, worth steering clear of. I don't mind one but one can usually be enough after a fair skelp of beer. I remember attempting to do tenpin bowl after being more than half-cut, tequila was the game killer. I was glad to have reached the bowling line, never mind a strike. LOL

"normal" is relative. hiCCup!

I think it is because Luxembourg is on top that I can't believe it.

In Ireland there is a pub culture, if you have not been it is difficult to explain.

We can end this now,
Who's drunk ?

a buddy of mine from a university in Poland zipped through 500 mL of 96% (192 proof) spirit. He needed no medical help and lived to get into the same major 3 more times (they kicked him out every year so he reapplied and passed the entrance exams 4 times)

I know Scots and Irish can hold the ground no less than Poles or Russians.

I should use in most Polish houses. Poles when they celebarete drink a lot of vodka. There is group of people who drink a lot but in most of Polish houses there is no beer or wine in everyday life only sometimes. When you resign from glass of wine after the work you can drink more on the party and in stats be "saint".

but we should start new debate about alcohol in Polish culture.

Ok, to further this discussion we need to focus on the question.

Who drinks more?

1)Per year per capita?

2)per sit in a group?

3) who is drunk now?

3)Binge drinkers and moderate drinkers (but perhaps more frequent)?

If you think a category needs to be added you can **** right off :)

Maybe we live in different "enviroment". :) I know my family customes and my friends customs. It wasn't my aim to fight stereotypes and polonophobia :). I will stick to my guns in most Polish families there is alcohol durring new years eve or on birthday party but there is much less alcohol in everyday life than in other countries

:)
