Ideas for gift for my Polish gf that will assist with learning English.

Hi,

I'm English and have a Polish girlfriend. I'm looking for something that i can give as a present that will help with her English. She has very good English and i would say she is at a more advanced level.

Do any of you Polish speakers have any recommendation for advanced English leaning material ?

Any help appreciated

I recommend an English boyfriend ;) Some advice from an experienced teacher ;) ;)

I am English, but it's not as easy as you think to teach English. It's easy to speak, but trying to explain things is not that easy.

Trust me it wouldn't be an insult, she's obsessed with getting her English perfect, so this would be a perfect present... I keep telling her how good she is, but she's stubborn and wants to know everything, so who am i to argue :)

Also she will be taking her masters degree in European law/relations and integration next term and will be living with me permanently in the UK and working, so she's very eager to perfect her English.

OK, on a more serious note, try CPE Use of English by Virginia Evans. If she is already advanced, this will give her some proficiency polish. I have really opened the eyes of my advanced students with this book. It gave their English a new dimension.

Buy a book that will help with understanding English law.

I mean a book for foreign students... A mixture of English Language learning and set legal phrases.

I recommend EU Law by Paul Beaumont and Stephen Weatherill. The former was my Prof whom I spent a lot of time discussing a range of issues with.

The Dummy guides are good too. Or Dla bystraków in Polish :)

Explaining things is not that hard, just pitch phrases at her level. You can teach almost anything to anyone with the right dedication :)

hehe yes exactly, some of the stuff she shows me from her English lessons baffles me. We never got taught any of this at school :/

I have been teaching for 6 years. I have taught at numerous different schools using different methods.

It's like bread and butter to me now. I also did European Law (with International Law) as my LLM subjects so I can vouch for the book above.

I just check that eu law book and it says it was published in 1999, isn't that a bit out dated ?

Aha, that's when I used it. I just assumed that he updated it periodically. To my knowledge, he is still the Head of Law at Aberdeen University. Ah well, I'm out of touch. Maybe something by Penny Ur, she's good.

i recommended electronical english- polish translator... doe snot matter how good is she in english ... it is gonna be always a useful tool... and what is more you can enrich this translator buy some specific terms and vocabulary also ..like law terminology...


thats only an idea...
