When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish?

I spend a lot of time in Poland these days.... and back in London, I've started to make friends with some brilliant Polish guys and girls.

So, the question is - do I emphasise the fact that I am Scottish, or British? I sometimes find that the French for instance are more sympathetic to fellow celts. Does it matter much to the Poles?

By the way, it's not like I walk around with my nationality on my sleeve, however if asked, I usually say that I am British, though I do pick people up when they describe me as English.

Holy Moly.... how did you know that??

I guess though, to complicate matters, it's not obvious from the first impression that I come from Scotland. Sure, I look 10 out of 10 celtic, however I have a fairly English accent.

i am not polish but live here. I think that poles would find more in common with the scots than the british in general and specifically the english. poland has a similar history in some ways to scotland

Yeah real scots that speak with a scottish accent. Not plastic ones with english accents who think they are scottish because of their mummy and daddy

To me there is no question that the Poles prefer Scots as people but they prefer the English football team.

Unless you wear a kilt, mangy long hair, wield a claymore and scream "FREEDOOOOM" at people passing by you sir are no scott.

LC - just be yourself. You don't need to emphasise anything. Your Polish friends will like you because of who you are and not your nationality. They may be interested in your Scottish roots through conversation but they won't turn their back on you if they think you're "British" or "English". Equally, just because a person is Scottish it doesn't mean they'll get on with Polish people. Be yourself. :)

............interesting point of view, but not one that most Poles subscribe too. Most went to school, I guess your parents kept you locked in a cupboard until you were old enough to make a few zloty in coffe heaven!

The look for your average woollyback has now changed to tracky bottoms, gelled hair, wielding a bottle of Buckfast and shouting 'No Surrender!

tbh though foreigners will always say they like Scots more than English/British as the Scots have successfully managed to make sure that anything negative they did in the name of Empire they did as Brits and anything successful they did as Scots. Scots played a massive, some would say disproportionate, part in the British empire when it existed. Mel Gibson wont be making any movies about that though.

Shame on you, call yourself a Scot! ;-) Just start practicing "Ockiaaa Tha Noo" and you'll be just fine.. :)

Personally I don't get this whole British thing, I consider myself English and I consider Scottish people to be Scots - so if you're a Scot, tell them that you're a Scot..but I agree with PD too :)
