Yeah, Polish bison are the very last remaining in the primeval forests in Europe.

I would like to see them, aren't they mainly around Bialastok? And the North East of the country?

They are beautiful looking creature.

I always put the scientific name of plants when I talk about them, so why should animals be any different?

This is the amazing Bison bonasus, reintroduced to the wild after near extinction - only a few remained in captivity in the first half of the 20th century.

Yeah, I know the 真br beer adverts romanticise.
They just remind me of a mix between buffalo and mammoths.
And the primeval forest, great stuff.

Actually we were hunting the wolves , with a camera...i got talked into driving a film crew around in a Landrover after rescuing them from a deep mudhole with my Landrover...The guy they had driving was not exactly an expert off road driver...Whilst chasing the wolves about we saw quite a few zubr , and some funny guys with machine guns who told us we had inadvertantly crossed the border into Belarus..oops...not so many years ago they would have shot us , now they just escort you back over the border...There isn,t a fence or a sign or anything , so its quite easy to stray onto the wrong side of the border if you are not keeping an eye on your map...

Good story WR :)

Bison don't have maps, at all.
I remember a few years ago they changed the law between South Africa and Botswana, the elephants, hippos etc were being shot with tranquillizers dart and dragged back to the country from which they were leaving.
They came to an agreement that these animals can roam "freely".
I wonder if it still exists?
I know this is common practise in many countries, unfortunately.

Sadly neither do wolves , or they would stay on the Polish side of the border where they are protected as opposed to the Belarussian side where its legal to shoot em....

Across near Bia造stok, right? Bison are such beautiful beasts. We used them in our D&D fantasy game. They make good attackers, inflicting heavy damage on foes.

真br is a good beer. I saw a lumbering lad walk around the city centre with a big bottle of it in his hands. Cool, civil defiance.

Thanks Greg, that was helpful, just what the thread needed.

There are bison in Bieszczady, I didn't know that. The only bison-like things here are the queues at PKO Bank Polski. They offer rates that'd put even us Scots to shame. Oops, stay on topic. Thanks again Greg

Bison are very important animals, culturally, to this part of the US. They used to exist in large herds in the northern part of the US, wherever there were grasslands.
They need savanna-like conditions to thrive, but with their coats they can tolerate severe winters.
I have seen bison in real life. They are much bigger than they look in photos. Our bison are endangered like the ones in Poland.
They are scarcer here than in Poland, probably, though I don't know for certain. Ours are mostly domestic cattles crosses kept in captivity, but there is hope the original species can repopulate the north american great plains one day.

I wonder if there are a lot of wild boar in Poland. When I was a soldier in Germany you would see them periodically. Apparently a few guys got chased by a mama when they stumbled upon a nest with babies. Boars are fast and mean not like a domestic pig.

Ours are American Bison, very beautiful and the state animal where I live. Here are two grazing in winter, which I'm sure is their favorite season with all that fur.

There are wild boar in the forests near Gliwice. I heard them when I was cycling and didn't stick around long. Curiosity killed more than the cat.

There was a guy mauled by one a few years back in the forest between Zabrze and Gliwice. Not a pretty sight.

In the forest..HA......I have the cute piggies in my garden , they take great delight in ripping up the turf to eat the roots of shrubs and stuff , and last winter i nearly walked into one that was poking about in my woodshed...They can be quite aggresive if you upset one , the females are very defensive of their young , and can infict a nasty bite...The male boar have razor sharp tusks that can rip you down to the bone from knee to groin....Don,t mess with them....
