polish-indian couple looking for baby names

I am not sure if this is the best place to post but I thought I would give it a try. My wife is Polish and I am Indian we live in the US. We are about to have a baby girl and we wanted to try to find a name that works in both cultures. Some examples include Asha (polish = Asia) or Anya (polish = ania), these are fairly common names in both cultures. Unfortunately, these names are already taken by close family so we need to find something else. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Hopefully there are some Indians living in Poland or Polish living in India that will read this and have some good suggestions!

Give her a Polish name....as her surname will probably be yours... :) ... so that would equalise ... ur wife will be happy too! (I presume)

Name her as in "namesake"... Gogol. :)) Partially it's slavic... so you wife should be pleased.

Hi Ginger5,

Indian, as in someone from the Indian subcontinent (ok Hindu -although technically this is a religion and our kid is going to be catholic). My wife translated some of your suggestions and I think they are hilarious, I am tempted to use one of them as a name but I will probaly not got support from my wife.

Hi, my husband is also indian and i'm polish:) in future if we have a daughter we wanna give her name Jasmine - I think it's nice in both cultures...:)

Thanks for the suggestion martuchaa.It is a pretty name but my wife said it isn't Polish and I think she really wants Polish or Polish sounding names.

Maja wouldn't sound bad - even though the connotations of "Maya's veil" might not be what you're after.

I used to know an indian woman called Panna. That would be an intersting name for a female in Poland.

I'm of indian origin and my husband is Polish. I gave birth to a beautiful babygirl in Jan this year. We also had difficulties to find a name for our baby. My husband didnt want to give her a polish name because he said that they are too common and not much variety. So we gave her a hindu name according to her astrological chart, bear in mind as well to choose a name which has a nice meaning.

Hi! Everybody!!!!
Good to see that people have the same problem like us. We were just blessed with a baby girl, and we could only shortlist 2 names for our baby girl which fits both our culture. Although she will get my Indian last name but we came to a decision to name her Maja (Polish version) and Maya (Indian version)...... the name Anita was also in the back of our mind but eventually Muja won. I do understand your dilemma, as we had our share too regarding the name but thanks god we could settle it though.

From my knowledge there is at least one name in polsih which is Ilona... my bf told me that in hindi it is the name of tree ... do not know if it helps but just for the record :P

Neither of the two in the relationship are Turkish. Turkish and Indians are totally different cultures - with totally different religions. Christianity is more closely related to Islam (as Abrahomic religions).

Hi Babyname,

I am curious what name you went with because you have probably had the baby by now.

My wife and I are in a similar situation: I am Polish and she is Indian. We've just had a baby boy and named him Anjay Dymitri, with my last name.

We chose Anjay because it is both a Polish and Hindi name, although we went with the Hindi spelling because it is phonetically compatible with English and because it balances out nicely with our Polish last name. Dymitri was a name I've always loved and like it for its Slavic roots.

I think some good names for girls are that reflect both cultures are Natasha, Sonia, Maya, Alka.
