How to proceed after getting a gift from my spouses grandmother?

My spouse's grandmother who I have never met lives in Poland and she sent me some jewelry in the mail. I really liked it and want to show my appreciation. How should I thank her? I don't speak polish. Do I send a gift or write a thank you letter? Should I invite her to my home? I thought to send a gift but I have no idea what an older polish lady would like or want. We also hope that one day she would invite us to stay with her for a holiday, but spouse says that this is a complicated situation, and that we would have to be invited before we could even think of going. Any thoughts?

A nice thqnk-you letter would be fine. If she doesn't know English, then have your spouse translate it. Older ladies are usually surrounded by a lifetime of collectibles, and often want to unload some of the clutter rather than getting more. But, of course, every sitaution is an individual case. Your spouse probably has the best insight as to what his Babcia would appreciate, if it is something other than your gratitude and warm regards.

Polonius3: Older ladies are usually surrounded by a lifetime of collectibles, SO TRUE, at least from what I know! I think a nice card and thank you note (translated with your spouse's help, of course) would make her happy!

Ok, thank you very much! That sounds better anyway since I don't have a lot of money for a gift at the moment.
