Leo is a good coach, the problem is not really here...

Leo was a good coach. He needs a fresh infusion of new ideas and he just doesn't have it. He could cast his net wider and draft in more players from Lech Poznań or just look around more. There are Polish players who could have raised the profile of the team.

the continent where soccer is a way of life

compared to? south america?

Success in what they call a league in USA can not be compared to the level of competition we are discussing here. A national team in Europe.

as solid as Boruc

lately yes but last season? well lets just say he has had his ups and downs (with the bottle)
I am happy they lost so we dont have to suffer watching them for a while! I was watching Scotland/Holland. Even though the Scots lost they really played with heart!

Until the FA/football mafia in Poland is brought under control and the manager can actually pick his own players the rate of success will be limited

Leo was a good coach.

Indeed, he WAS. He basically scr*wed up my team Feyenoord some time ago and most F-fans will not forgive him that first he said "I am glad to be back home again" (with tears in his eyes, literally) and then after not even half a season he joins Ajax! That's why I don't like Leo.

But like I said before, when there is too little talent in a team, even the best coach in the world cannot bring miracles. Look at the Irish team: they have Trapatoni as coach and they play slightly better, but still it is average. Why? Because there are too few big talents in the team. Compare this to the Dutch team. Bert van Marwijk is an average trainer, but he knows how to get the best out of a player with the least efforts. And of course, we finally have a reasonable pool of talented players. Hasn't been like that for a long time. Let's hope they do well in SA.

Klose should fit in the Dutch team pretty good, the way it looks now. He is the type of player that would fit in the style of play. Germany was just quicker than Poland; now he can only play for Germany. Or is it different? I think that once a player has played for the national team of one country, he cannot play for another national team anymore? I thought it was like that, but I am not a 100 per cent sure.

Erm...Klose came to Germany under the "Aussiedler"-law...meaning his family has german roots.

How could Holland claim him???
Shouldn't you look to your ex-colonial islands instead? Ya now...those rastafari-spitters...

It was meant hypothetically. I just looked at his style of play and he is the only German player that would be able to fit in the Dutch system nowadays. That's why. I did not say that we actually wanted him :)

It still hurts? Well, it was 21 years ago and it was a settlement for 1974 when we should've become world champion as we definitively had the best team: Johan Cruyff was part of it and whenever Johan Cruyff (voted best European player of the 20th century) is part of the team, that team is (technically) the best. Actually we should've been world champion in 1978 too, but then the Dutch team was pretty much bullied by the Argentian government of the day. I read that on the night of the finals no live music was allowed in the whole of Buenos Aires, except in the Hotel where the Dutch were staying. More specific, they installed a live band right underneath the bedroom windows of the players. The band played until 4 in the morning.

What happened in 1988 was just revenge for 1974. We got it (become European Champion in Germany, but beating Germany was even more important -although I have to say that the Dutch nearly always have good experiences with tournaments held in Germany. In 1987, when Fifa threatened to disqualify the Dutch because of some incident in Cyprus with a stick or fireworks, the Germans protested and said they would prefer the Dutch instead of the Greek. Why - I think that is obvious.) and we don't mind the German team now. Of course, you always got idiots, but in principle that game was the most important of all Germany vs the Netherlands games since 1974. Emotions rose high and we were simply the better team: van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Koeman, all in one team. No other team could match that.

You had your revenge, we had our revenge, it should be ok now. At least for me. However, since my significant other is German, I predict some quite interesting conversations should Holland meet Germany in SA next year :S
