GlasgowSteven: This is true.... to an extend, Celtic are a Scottish club with strong Irish roots, roots we are still proud of today, but always has been and always will be a club for all of the people. Celtic have never ever been Exclusively a catholic club, in-fact some of our greatest servant's were Protestants, including the clubs greatest ledgend, the immortal Jock Stein and Celtic have signed players on their merits as a footballer from day 1 rather than their creed colour or religion.. Jock Stein was so immortal that Celtic would not give him a place on their board as he was a Protestant. They only offered him a junior position.Rangers on the other hand, had a policy of not signing catholics from their first days, a policy that was still in place till as late as 1990 when they signed the first high profile catholic in Mo Johnston Completely untrue. Rangers were never formed to be a Protestant only club. This did not come into effect until around the 1930's and even then Rangers were never Protestant only. There have been many Catholic players over the years. As you stated, Mo Johnston was the first HIGH PROFILE catholic and not the first catholic player.further more the have only had 1 catholic manager in their history and this came only 2 years ago with the signing of Frenchman Paul Le Guen. Which means what exactly? Given the very small percentage of the population of Scotland that are Catholic, I do not think it is unreasonable that Rangers have only had one Catholic manager. To go back to an earlier point made, Celtic enjoy a great support in Ireland because the Club was formed by a Catholic brother (Walfrid) in 1888 to help the poor any needy in the east end of Glasgow, which was mostly populated by the immigrants from Ireland at that time. and now in 2008 most if not all Scottish catholics (only 700,000 in a country of 5million) have roots dating back to Ireland. Celtic may enjoy a great support in Republic of Ireland but they do not in Scotland. In fact, the majority of Scottish people are becoming more aware of how Celtic have been a disgrace to Scotland mainly due to their support of the IRA terrorist organisation and their cover up of a child sex abuse scandal. Jock Stein played a huge part in the cover up of this scandal at the time. The following link gives much more detail of Celtic's shameful past. http://ifyouknowtheirhistory.blogspot.com/but i have lived in Dublin for a few years, and other teams like Manchester Utd and Liverpool enjoy a better "support" in football terms, people here though have an emotional tie to Celtic.
