markymark2: Was it due bad weather (they should stop the game, too rainy) Nowadays I doubt they would have let the match start .... they were atrocious conditions, and definitely suited the German team more.
southern: A team based on talent and technique loses its advantages when the play ground is inconvenient for high quality playing. Poland relied more on the speed of their forwards and slick passing so the heavily waterlogged pitch ... more like a rice field ... was more of a disadvantage to the Polish team.
The Polish team of 1974 was truly great, with the likes of Deyna, Lato showing the world that we had real class players. It was a real shame that injury prevented another of Poland's great players, Włodzimierz Lubanski showing his talents at the World Cup.
The tournament also showed that Jan Tomaszewski, the goalkeeper, was not just a 'one match wonder' or 'clown' as Brian Clough called him; he will be remembered as one of Poland's best goalkeepers, and the main reason why England didn't qualify for the '74 WC.
