our favorite 'street game' was tour de france - you draw the route on the ground and then every kid gets a cown cap, from a bottle, and inches it through the course, one after the other, great game, if you tip the cap too hard you will get out of the route and have to go one step back, if you go slow you will fall back - great game teaches one the concept of risk. I remember going asleep and thinking what I would have done other during the day when I loosed a game.
but football was most popular - as well as some other types of footballgames like 'banging the wall'. than a kind of baseball, can't remember it to tell, though it was really fun to hit the ball, we used a plank as bat.

How about "policja i rabu¶"? (Did I do that right? My polish grammar is terrifying.)

We used to play *Kick the Tin* it was like hide and seek and started by kicking an empty food can, one child went to get it and everyone else went to hide. If the tin was kicked during the search the searcher had to get it back and all others could change hiding places.
If caught before the can was kicked you were out.
A great game!

I remember beside those mentioned "w ganianego"/"goniola" this games probably has got lots of names, one person is the chaser who chases children that are running away from him and if he slaps somebody across the hand, the slapped person becomes the chaser.

Another version of "ganianego" required two parallel walls one person in the middle was the chaser and these walls were "safe zones" in the appropriate moment everyone started running and if the chaser touched anyone that person was becoming the new chaser..

I also remember this game where everyone started next to each other with one of their foot set in the direction of the starting point so that they were touching each others foot.
When the game started everyone jumped back, and one after the other had their turn, during the turn they were trying to jump and step on somebody's feet - eliminating them that way.

ehh old times.

two games i remember well from when i was younger on the street were:

Kurby: Played with a football, one would stand either side of the road, the idea was to hit your opponents kurb and catch the ball when it rebounded of it. Everytime you successfully completed a 'kurby' you would score 1 point. Simple but fun and especially when your a competitive kid like i was :)

Manhunt: As it sounds, two teams of people (can be anywhere between 5 a side to 20 a side) one team would run and the other team would have to hunt them down (the boundaries being the area/estate or whatever ones you had set out. to complete a hunt you would have to grab the person you were chasing and say 1...2...3... manhunt caught. You would then take them back to a designated 'prison' area where members of the 'hunted' team could free them by touching them back into play.

I'm interested to know if any of these games were played in Poland, that is why i expalined them in a bit of detail??? In fact did anybody else play these games, Polak, Yank, Brit jeeez maybe even Fritz and Ivan play these games when they are young??

Guess I can't answer. And if I am allowed, is it because you consider Canadians to be just another brand of American, or still part of the empire? ;-)

We did play the second one, commonly called hide and seek. As a Canadian kid, we never played with soccer balls until we became more multi-cultural. It is gaining in popularity now.

no no, neither, Canada is a country in its own right. So of course your allowed to answer, so what sort of street games did you play??

Well this was the older kids version of 'hide and seek' it got a bit rough sometimes as you had to hold them to say the 1..2..3 thing, of course not forgetting the 'prison' part.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoEr1unYXRk&feature=related, here's a super street game. If Poland can teach kids to play this well at only 6, there's hope yet.

Breathtaking!!

Pshew, that's a relief! ;-)

tornado2007:
so what sort of street games did you play??

Well, there was street hockey, street hockey, American style Football, street hockey, baseball, and a game I can only call bases. Bases was the sort of game where two people threw a ball to each other, and there was a person who would run between the two bases, and try not to get tagged out by the people throwing the ball. Then there was street hockey.

lol that is sick :):)

ShawnH:

you just reminded me of another game 'british bulldog' which was actually banned from school playgrounds, the basic idea of the game was to get from one side of an area to another (this may be a road, strip of grass/turf, etc etc) One person started off in the middle, while all the other players crossed the space. The person in the middle would have to tackle/tag or do whatever they could to stop the people crossing, the people who were tagged/tackled joined the person in the middle until only one person was left crossing from side to side.

I used to play kurby too, we called it "stoeprandje" (lit: little curb-edge).

Lots of games involved blindfolds:

1) Koekhappen (lit: bite the cake): you tie a rope between two poles (no offence meant) and on that rope you tied a couple of pieces of "ontbijtkoek" (a sort of ginger-shortbread cake). Now taking turns, everybody would get blindfolded and turned around a few times and had to keep his/her hands behind the back. The one who managed to find the cake with his mout and ate it, was the winner. If nobody manages to eat the cake whole, winner was the one who took the most bites.

2) Appelduiken (diving for apples): you take a tub and fill it with water. In that water you throw some apples. Again taking turns, everybody got blindfolded with their hands behind their backs and had to kneel on the side of the tub. You played this with two ppl on both sides of the tub. The one who grabbed an apple with his mouth first was the winner.

A variation was to sink wrapped sweets to the bottom of the tub and you had to get your head into the water to snatch a sweet from the bottom. The one who does this the quickest is winner. This version is without blindfold, but with hands on the back.

and 3: Ezeltje prik (prick the donkey or donkey's tail): on a piece of paper, you would draw a donkey and blindfolded you would try to prick a piece of rope with a thumbnail pushed through one end of it, through the paper - the donkey's tail. The one who placed the "tail" closest to the position of the donkey's body where the tail is supposed to be is winner.

>^..^<

Absolutely amazing how good he is. Zidane apparently inspired him. Zidane was that way. I scored a Kinkladze type goal tonight, fair chuffed.

some interesting games you got there, your 'blindfolds' thing reminded me of 'blind man's bluff' This is where somebody was blindfolded and the rest of the people in the room would try and hide and not be tagged by the 'blind man' (You could not say that now a days, it would have to be blind persons bluff, lol)' All things were fair game including putting things in the way of the blindfolded person to make your escape, i found the most effective way to win the game (be last tagged) was to be as far of the ground as possible.

Yep. Then there was another game called red-rover, I can't remember the rules of engagement though.

Also Red light - green light. There was a person in the middle of a field of a set dimension. The other kids would start at one end of the field, and would advance when the person in the middle (with his/her back to the mob) would yell green light. Kids would advance until he called yellow light. The mob would have to stop. Back to green light (advance) until the man in the middle would yell red light, turn and chase and try to catch one of the mob. If caught, you would now be the man in the middle.

We used to do that too. Of course it was allowed to put up blockades too :) But it was much more fun to make noises close to the "Blind Man" and then move away when he tried to tag you :)

damn right it was, i used to set traps, stand right behind them and then start making silly noises and watch the 'blindman' run straight into the trap :):)

that was in a small room!!!

i remember that game, if you had shite reactions and were slow, you always ended up being the guy in the middle :):)

This was a made up game, constructed and designed at our school called 'shoe people' In our school we had four swings all in a row, the basic idea was to sit on the swing, gain as much height and speed as you could and release your shoe across the playground!!!! Bare in mind that there were a lot of other kids crossing the dead ground (as it was designated) and there would often be casualties of war. Obviously the person who was voted the winner had kicked their shoe the furthest and the unlucky loser had to go and gather the shoes for the rest of the players.

its nice to know that these games still exist and are being played by the kids of today, i'm having a right old good time here remembering all the games i played on the street :)

the fumbles behind the bikeshed and in the bushes were ok but i tell you what i would never miss a game of british bulldog, shoe people or manhunt.

Bulldog was my favourite

One I remember for girls was Queen-i-oh.
The player threw a ball over her shoulder and the girl who caught/retrieved it hid the ball behind her back all the other girls copying her, they then took a step forward. The thrower had to guess who was hiding the ball, if wrong they all started again taking a step closer. The first to draw level with the thrower became the new thrower and then back to the start.
