Gdansk - need some information about it

I spent a day in Gdansk last month. The Old Town, at night, is wonderful, really. And i've been told it's even better in winter, at Christmas time, with all the lights and the ambiance.. ;) I think you'll find all you need on the Internet if you know where to search. You can also read books, go to a library and give a look at every book about Gdansk you could find. Good luck ;)

Gdańsk - the home of Solidarity (the dockyard) has the biggest medieaval church in Poland (guess it's the biggest brick church in Poland) Mary's Church in the Old Town - can't remember the name of the street (also in the Old Town) which is called 'amber street' not far from the church - Gdańsk is pretty (or at least was in the old times) famous for its amber jewelry and similar - one important fact is that much of the Old Town has been rebuilt after substantial war damage (it was not actually damaged during combat but that's a different story) to emulate the looks it had before the war - you will personaly be able to jugde the result - Oliva borough of Gdańsk is a home of organ music festival (one of the biggest and oldest organ preserved in Poland)

Thank you everyone - well most of you! Yes I have googled and found lots of facts, and it sounds beautiful. But I wanted to know something that only a polish person, or someone living there, would know about. The large organ thing sounds interesting... Aniol ~i~

What about the fact that it's got the longest residential builing in the world (sorry, can't remember the name of it), but there about two or three bus stops that serve it.

It's in the north of Poland ;) ;) Just kidding. It was a Hanseatic city, formerly called Danzig. It was founded in 966 I think and a Czech bishop was an important visitor. Their rivals are Arka Gdynia.

Aniol: does anyone know anything interesting about Gdansk? Yep. I've been living here for two years. I could tell you about the woman in the window near Neptune and the bas relief of Diana on Mariacka and why it's so unique, but I ain't gonna tell you until you come here and I can show them to you myself. Personally acquired knowledge is a whole lot better than anecdotal, and I'll even buy you a piwo at my favorite place in the process.

Danzig !! there are so many thieves and Polish people tried to cheat tourists all the time . Be careful!! and don't talk with anyone who comes closer. don't change money with the man on the street ,go to KANTOUR

SzwedwPolsce: Everywhere in the world where there are tourists there are thieves. (Travel rule #1) Indeed. Gdańsk is a fairly friendly place. It doesn't seem to have any real centre though. The Old Town is first and foremost a tourist place, ul. Grundwaldska stretches on for ever, and people seem to pop between Gdańsk and the rest of the Tri-city on the SKM all the time. If there's a real heart of Gdańsk, maybe it's in Wrzeszcz.
