Kazimierz Dolny: An afternoon is enough.

I was rather disappointed by Kazimierz Dolny.

It is rather quaint in it's own way, but the museums are a rip-off (most everything thing there is, actually) and the hordes of tourists didn't make it any better. The castle is OK, as are the churches, but beyond that there really isn't that much.
The musicians are awful.
The rooster bread is actually really good. The few restaurants I've been to there are very nice. U Fryzjera has really good food, but the service is terrible.

Can read further here.

Are there any other towns "off the beaten path" that are worth a visit?

I wouldn't recommend going there in tourist season at all TBH, and I live ten mins away from there.
The only time that we go there are in the first week of August as they have a film festival there and that week it is fantastic
Lots of things going on including a dance party in the castle which is cool and street theatre.
More about it here
Oh by the way knob, I would much prefer to live here in the country than where you do in that disgusting grey hole called Warsaw lol

Yeah, Warsaw is tad gray. It's not too bad though.

I quite like the Polish countryside. I'm actually yearning for a small place in the country. A dzialka is probably the closest thing in the near future.

I highly recommend this thread on the Polish countryside.
I didn't write it, and I don't really agree with it, but I found the discussion in the comments quite interesting. It gets quite sharp and quite angry at some points.

I didn't say that it was bad, I just though that an afternoon was enough.
I was also inquiring about other such towns, ones that might be hidden and off the beat track.

From what I have heard (But then I live in that grey hole called Warsaw, which I happen to find a nice place to live) Sandomierz and Lubliń are supposed to be very nice.

Sounds just like Krakow to me (awaits hate mail, lol) - I'm going back there soon just to check if it wasn't just me, but I've been there enough times, and all have left me... unimpressed. Whereas I've been to Wroclaw and Warsaw countless times, and still never want to leave. Guess it might just be me though! lol

Kazimierz Dolny.

It depends what you are looking for. Most tourist are weekend tourist and hover around the market place. If you stay beyond the weekend, the town becomes completely different. There are lots of galleries where you can contemplate and buy the paintings (the choice is enormous). You can always stop and chat with painters whom you meet in the town and vicinity. There are also lots of walking paths around. You can take a boat to the other side of the Vistula and walk for an hour to nearby castle in Janowiec (the only privately-owned castle in Poland in the period of the People's Republic). While we were there last year, a film was turned out in the town all the day and I was taken some splendid photographs by my wife in the middle of several young women dressed and hair-dressed in the style of the 1960s! Also, concerts and other performances in the church were held almost every Saturday (we attended one marvellous one by Anna Szałapak). Some seasonal bookshops where you can spend hours looking at what they have in stock.

It's not a good place to come for one afternoon only. We stayed there two weeks and avoided the market place and its vicinity in the weekends as much as we could. We were staying in a nice and friendly bed-and-breakfast surrounded by a vast garden run by the same family since 1919. It was just within a 15-minute walking distance from the centre - far too long for a weekend or afternoon tourist to disturb the nature and the silence there. Strangely enough, we haven't heard any musicians playing in the streets of Kazimierz Dolny.
