We will be arriving in Krakow late April and need some infos.
We don't really like touristy places, so we are looking for pubs and clubs frequented by students etc. with decent prices. Maybe there is even a whole district like Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain in Berlin or Zizkow in Prague.
Any ideas?

How about bary mleczne? Any good of those left in Krakow?

We would like to travel on a week later or so to Prague.
What would be the easiest and chepest way to go?

Nowy kleparz is near the student accommodation, depending upon which way you drive. Come on tell us the name of the pub, I shall not bring my British friends there I promise, really really really. I am curious,I think that I was possibly in this bar, after a concert at the university. If you tell me the name I shall tell you the price of the beer at that time.

I had quite nice Gołąbki in a place on Karmelicka about a 10 min walk from the main square.

It is very amazing if you are a young student, and very near the Rynek.

lol...
it's the biggest campus in PL...
you can visit bars full of students there, one is called 'studio' ('38' in the past) and another one 'zaścianek'...
and good food in the 'różowy słoń' ('pink elephant') - it's not campus anymore, but straszewskiego st.

Thank you so much for all the tips!!!

Unfortunatly the only bar mleczny you can find in guide books and forums as a Non-Cracovian is U Babci Maliny, but with all the recommendations we should be good to go.

Can't wait for all the Zurek, Barzsz, Golombki, Pierogi, Nalesniki..............

Thanks again!

EDIT: Just found the train connection to Prague for 19€:

U Babci Malini is not really bar mleczny.. it's actually way better :P as far as i remember you can find bar mleczny on Grodzka and another on Jagiellońska.. it's cheap alright but I'd suggest you just go to Babcia Malina ;) there's actually a few of those in Kraków. also friggin cheap :P Don't know bout others.. but the one on Sławkowska has this fish tank smack in the middle and those fish are really creepy. One always eyed me suspiciously.

*sobs a little* I lived on Szlak.. just where it crosses Długa. Good times.

I'm wondering whether "U pani Stasi" on Mikołajska street is still functioning? It was very good and cheap food.

yes, Stasia (rather her son) is still going strong. Try also Bar Smak on Karmelicka - a couple of doors down from the Bagatela theatre.
