Lonely Planet recently voted Warsaw as one of the top places to vist in 2009... but now DK has responded with it's list of travel tips - and they recommend Gdansk. Full article here: URL

Its great to see Poland making these lists, isn't it?

Agreed. Poland is finally coming out of the shadows. I still have a bee in my bonnet about the national Polish Tourist Office doing virtually diddly squat for Polish tourism.

In my northern town, why do I see posters for Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary and nothing for Poland ??

Anyway enough of my rant....

Gdansk is now being labelled the "new Krakow".

"This is just an advertising message to foreigners...." duh ! you don't say ??

When you're not stating the obvious then you're talking utter diatribe. "Gdansk minus the cheap vodka is nothing" ???? Unless I missed something when did Gdansk gain it's reputation as having the cheapest vodka in Poland ?

Gdansk is 3 cities in 1 as Gdynia and Sopot are all well worth visiting. Hel Peninsula ?? Malbork Castle ??? And all of these sights in a single weekend break !

Yes, Gdansk is a really unique city.
Full of monuments. Not so expensive. Big enough to find a decent Rave gig and most of all: near the Baltic sea!
If I have to choose between Warsaw, Cracow, Poznan or Gdansk I would choose Gdansk.
(and is not that I'm a local patriot cause I was born in Bialystok and currently I live in London)

>>> i can never compare gdansk to london. like the houses have this concrete finish and left unpainted. gdanks is picturesque in a very unique way. a city sitting between the forest and the sea. sigh.....

but there's this thing, if you want to open gdansk to tourists, please be more welcoming. improve your customer service skills even if the tourist can't speak in polish. make an EFFORT TO SMILE AT CUSTOMERS and STOP STARING AT TOURISTS (especially asians)! majority of the polish girls here in london don't smile when they're serving customers. what's up with you guys?

Gdansk is really nice with a lot of water in the city. And it's not far if you want to go to some decent beaches. They started to advertise themselves later than Wawa and Krakow. But the city have a big potential and you can see that on the number of tourist that are now starting to visit the city.

Different cultures, different customs.

You would choose Pałac Branickich any day. ;)

Antother foriegner who has seen one area of London and thinks it is typical. Suppose you think that the UK has no lakes, mountains or greenery. Believe me some of the architecture in London is unrivalled. Please get off ur pretty a*** and take a look

What about some of the areas in gdansk where the buildings are grey and drab? The commie tower blocks in gdansk are a depressing sight

...Gdansk’s old town has been spruced up and the picturesque Bergher houses that line its streets are interspersed with...

Bergher houses? Do they mean the old german Bürgerhäuser?

it is common knowledge among Poles that Gdansk has a lot to offer in many departments, but it is not an inexpensive city, as some people claim.

Gdansk is our 'Sister City' in Seattle. The Polish Home and Mayor are very involved in both cities and promoting the Polish Spirit!

Even some of the grey, drab "commie" blocks are being spruced up. I stayed with some friends, for a few days and had arrived at night. I was surprised when I woke in the morning because everything used to be grey.

Darn, the file size is too big. I'll have to see if I can resize and post later. Sorry....tried twice.

center

It has been rebuild after WWII.

New architecture is being more and more interesting.

Please don't talk about "customer service skills". Tourists should learn at least the basic of language first. Who wants tourists in Gdańsk? Oh they don't seem to care about this lovely city.
It's kinda annoying when you're walking down the crowded street (because of tourists) and you hear someone speaking a different language.
kabanos002   Sep 17, 09, 09:42 /  #
how about at least considering that poland's been at war with someone for forever????

well, at least, after five minutes of walking around in gdansk, you actually already have a view of the forest. by car, less than 10 minutes.

in london, it takes at least about 30 minutes train ride plus 15 minutes walking before you can reach a proper park (not even a forest) - that's central london to richmond park.

It's not expensive for tourists. Those of us who live here just go to places most tourists never find.
