"Ryanair cuts 11 routes to Poland"

Ryanair has become the latest airline to reduce its services to Poland, after it confirmed today that it is cutting 11 of its routes from March.

The cancelled services include those from Bristol, Birmingham, Bournemouth, East Midlands, Luton and Liverpool.

The airline, which has defied the downturn by announcing 23 new routes from the UK this year, blames the "unacceptable increase in navigation charges" in Poland for the decision.

It is very sad news. Pretty soon we'll be back to only one or two operators offering flights to Poland at very high prices. That's not good at all.

I don't know. What should they be in the first place? It appears they've gone UP in Poland and that is why they are cutting the flights to Poland (yet seem to be opening up new routes elsewhere).

As far as I understand the fees have gone up by 1000% and are now at a level which makes the lo-cost model unworkable for Poland. It's very suspicious that this action is only taken after LOT's lo-cost operation went under.

Look on the bright side. If low cost airlines all fail miserably they will be able to turn the bloody awful Etiuda terminal at Warsaw into a Garden Centre or a skating rink or something of that ilk.

Flights to Lodz finish in October..... there is nothing else going from the UK to Lodz now or later. This is going to be a big problem for businesses that have relocated there and for those who want to come to the UK for work........ I have to be honest I hate Ryanair, if you have ever flown with them they really crank the charges up if you go over the 15KG weight limit and the size of the flight bag specified you take on the plane is smaller than the industry standard.... which means in theory I can't even take my lap top on board. One cup of coffee and and a sandwich £7.00 - yeah very low cost. I just hope an alterantive carrier steps in.

McCoy: irish revenge More like Polish stupidity. The idea of the 1000% rise in prices (by a state owned agency) is clearly to drive out the cheap operators and thus take financial pressure off LOT (which, by an amazing coincidence, also state-owned) by forcing more people to fly on LOT. Unfortunately the government haven't factored in the damage that will be done to the economy by the number of tourists going down hugely because people will just fly to the places which cheap flights do go to. Most of the Polish people who used cheap airlines will just go back to travelling by bus.

I actually quite like Ryan Air - they had really made Poland much more accessable. Everyone grips about them, but hey - you get what you pay for. I've flown with LOT too, and they're fine as an airline, however their flights are all from Heathrow, which is a bit of a schlep for me. Standsted is more convenient for me, as I live in East London. I was planning on taking my mum to Kolobrzeg this Summer - she lives near Bristol, so it would have been great for her to get a flight from Bristol to Szczecin and I'd meet here there. Back to the drawing board now...

LondonChick: which is a bit of a schlep for me. Standsted is more convenient for me, as I live in East London. Don't worry! I live in Cumbria! with no more flights from Liverpool, London is quite a hike!

I'm still mourning the death of Central Wings. A chicken kanapkę and an iced tea for under £3. BA have irked me too by changing their routes from Gatwick to Heathrow.

Here's an amazing co-incidence: as of 1 February 2009 LOT was only the third biggest airline operating out of Poland.
